About Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is only 7 km (4 miles) long and less than 1 km (0.6 miles) wide. That’s right—this is a tiny paradise. But don’t let its teeny size put you off. This seaside oasis has beaches, culture, and activities for all tastes.  

This island has been a special place for centuries, and the first signs of life on the island date back as far as 1500 years ago. Research shows that Isla Mujeres was a sanctuary for the Mayan goddess Ixchel, associated with the moon, fertility, medicine, and happiness. A temple in Ixchel’s honor once sat on the island’s southern tip. This structure also doubled as a lighthouse for locals that harvested salt. 

However, the island was “found” in 1517 by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. 

Today, Isla Mujeres is still a sanctuary.

If you’ve been reading about the best Caribbean beaches, you’ll know Playa Norte. This iconic spot always tops the lists, thanks to its clear waters, white sand, and chilled-out vibe. Of course, as one of the most popular spots, you will find other travelers here. But the crowds don’t detract from this coastline’s beauty. 

Playa Norte offers restaurants, food vendors, loungers, toilets, and nearby shops. You’ll also find some Isla Mujeres beach club options and beach bars here. So don’t worry if you forget your beach bag, but ensure you have a few pesos to pay for the amenities.

Another highlight of this laidback beach is the beachfront massages. Yes, you can lay back and watch the waves while a professional masseuse removes the knots in your back. True relaxation. 

Playa Norte is usually packed in the afternoon and evening. So, to take advantage of the loungers—arrive before 2 pm to be safe. You’ll have to pay a flat fee for these amenities or order something from a nearby restaurant. It’s only fair!

Pro Tip: The northeast side of this beach is usually quieter than the northwest area. 

Playa El Cocal

Don’t spend all your time in Playa Norte when Playa El Cocal is just next door. Situated northwest of the island, Playa El Cocal provides year-round postcard-ready views. Here you can swim, lounge, and bask in the beauty of mother nature.

West Coast Beaches

Ideal for a quiet moment. 

The buzz of a busy beach is all part of the fun atmosphere. But if you fancy a moment of peace, the West Coast is the seaside spot for you. Located downtown and west of the island, these beaches are much more chilled than the famous Centro and Norte coastlines. 

Here you’ll find calm waters and a lagoon-like atmosphere. The seawater here is spotted with natural seagrass, but don’t let that put you off. This oasis is perfect for a warm dip. Like Playa Centro, the West Coast experiences spectacular sunsets. 

Unlike the previous two beaches, the West Coast doesn’t have public access points. To rock up and enjoy the waves, you must visit one of the coastal restaurants, hotels, or beach clubs, like Nomads Hotel & Beach Club.

That said, there’s no shortage of amenities here. No packed lunch? No problem.

Playa Lancheros, Isla Mujeres

For foodies and sunbathers.

Want to relax on a smaller beach? Playa Lancheros is on the island’s west side and closer to the southern point than the ferry port. So, this is a bit further than most hotels. 

However, once you arrive, you’ll be able to enjoy the fine sands and many surrounding restaurants in peace. This beach area is especially known for great seafood, including local specialties.

You don’t need to be an avid golfer to rent one of Isla Mujeres’ famous golf carts. Unfortunately, you can’t rent cars on this small island. So instead, golf carts are the fashionable alternative. Remember, you can drive around the whole island in 30 minutes, and let’s face it, golf carts are way more fun than cars. 

You can find the golf cart rental companies near the main town ferry dock.

Pro Tip: Want to bring a car? Though these used to be banned, tourists can now drive them if they rent them from the mainland. 

Explore Punta Sur and See the Ixchel Statue

Remember the goddess Ixchel we described earlier? Well, you can pay homage to her in person. 

On the southern tip of the island, you’ll find Punta Sur. This spot offers cliff-top views, a sculpture garden, and a majestic sculpture of Ixchel herself. Whether you turn your trip into a hike or shoot down on a golf cart, this point is unmissable. 

This point is open every day from 7 am to 5 pm. You’ll have to pay 30 pesos ($1.50) to enter. 

Pro Tip: The trails to the water can be slippery. We advise wearing sneakers on this trip (rather than flip-flops).

Situated next to Punta Sur, The Garrafon is a natural reef park that offers organized snorkeling tours, kayaking, zip lining, and other thrilling activities. This is a must-visit for all adrenaline junkies.

But you don’t have to put in so much legwork. Bicycles are available in the main town. Here, it’s easy to hop on and cycle to your heart’s content.

However, time your cycling well. This island gets very hot, especially in the middle of the day. Take necessary sun protection and lots of water to avoid heat stroke or illness. 

Try Snorkeling or Diving

Bring Cash

Travel cards without international fees are amazing. We understand. But not all places are contactless, and you can’t always rely on local ATMs. 

Keeping pesos on hand for small businesses and local vendor payments would be best. Some Isla Mujeres businesses do accept cards but don’t expect all to. 

ATMs are available on the island, so you can get cash there. There’s an HSBC ATM located directly next to the ferry terminal. There are also currency conversion businesses. However, we strongly suggest bringing some spare change just in case. 

Pro Tip: Press DECLINE when withdrawing cash after seeing “Accept Conversion Rate.” You will still get your money, but ATMs usually give you a worse conversion offer than the bank. 

Wi-Fi and Cell Service

The island has cell and Wi-Fi service, but it can be spotty. You can find free Wi-Fi at many hotels, beach clubs, and restaurants, but don’t expect super-fast networks.

Usually, Wi-Fi can support web browsing, emails, and messaging. However, you might run into problems with large downloads, uploads, and streaming.

Carry Water Around

Isla Mujeres is a sunny paradise. But don’t get too distracted by the gorgeous climate (and margaritas)—stay hydrated and healthy. Bottled water is readily available and affordable, so carry some around—especially when you’re getting active. 

Respect Your Surroundings

The ferry to Isla Mujeres from Playa Del Carmen is only 30-45 minutes, so you’d be crazy not to go. 

Playa Del Carmen gives you bright city lights, fantastic nightlife, and access to jaw-dropping beaches. However, Isla Mujeres offers an entirely different vibe. Here, you’re on a tiny island surrounded by beauty and culture. Plus, there’s an extra relaxed vibe that the mainland doesn’t offer. Who doesn’t want to unwind on an island in the Caribbean Sea?

Spending a few nights on the island will give you the best experience. But don’t worry if you’re strapped for time. You can easily book an Isla Mujeres tour from local vendors in Playa Del Carmen to ensure you see the sights in a day.

Additionally, accommodation on the island’s north side will be closer to restaurants, shops, facilities, and beaches. Options on the south are quieter and more secluded, but this is perfect if you want to be away from the main strip. 

Pro Tip: Are you backpacking? Isla Mujeres boasts a range of hostels. From laidback residences to party hostels, this is the best accommodation for meeting fellow travelers. 

Weather in Isla Mujeres 

Great news for those who like a bit of consistency—Isla Mujeres offers a predictable tropical climate all year round. Uh-huh, you can easily guess what the weather will feel like for your visit. Perfect for that all-important outfit planning. 

Typically, the temperature here remains around 83°F (28°C) throughout the year. Of course, this average could go up or down by a few degrees. But don’t expect much more change than that. 

What tourists really need to take note of is the hurricane season. From late May to early November, Isla Mujeres experiences a rainy season. The odds of a hurricane hitting the island are low; less than half a dozen have hit Yucatan in the past 40 years. But the chance of severe weather is real.

Hurricane Season Pro Tip: Consider opting for travel insurance and check weather reports ahead of time if your visit falls between these months. 

So, when should you visit? Well, the choice is up to you. The weather is consistent throughout the year, but there’s a rainy season. 

If you want to save on costs, we recommend visiting from May to October in the rainy season. Most vendors and hotels lower their rates for these months, yet the sun still shines, and there are great diving opportunities.

November and December are generally considered the best months to go to the island, as you get dry weather and low humidity. 

You’ll also experience great dry weather between January and April, but these months see the most traffic.

How to get to Isla Mujeres 

Before you hit the fine beach sands, you need to make an easy journey from the mainland to the island. Luckily, this is much easier than most travelers expect. 

You’ll likely arrive from Cancun, as this is the closest mainland point to the island. Many routes from Cancun to Isla Mujeres are available, but the most popular by far is via the regular ferry (rather than a private boat.) 

If you opt for the ferry, you can choose the 30-minute fast pass journey or the standard 45-minute ferry. Both options depart from Cancun and take a direct route to the island. 

Many travelers spend some time in Cancun before crossing the sea. But there are also shuttle bus and ferry combination deals that take you straight from Cancun Airport (CUN) to the island if you don’t want to stop. This entire journey takes approximately an hour and 20 minutes. Perfect for traveling on a time limit or skipping Cancun if you’ve visited before.

While we always advise booking in advance, the ferry is easy to book last minute. Ideal if you fancy a spontaneous trip from Cancun.
