Eine schöne Aussicht vom Zentrum aus Ngwe Saung

About the ride from Yangon to Ngwe Saung

Ngwe Saung is located about 155 miles (~250km) from the capital city of Yangon. Yangon is the closest airport, so your options are to take a bus, a minivan, or hire a car. The bus from Yangon to Ngwe Saung is the cheapest and easiest way to travel. If you happen to go during the day you will be treated to some stunning views. Try to get a window seat so you can gaze at the Burmese countryside as you travel westward towards the beach. You will also pass through Pathwe and Pathein, two typical Burmese towns full of trishaws and golden pagodas.

Whether you choose the bus, a minivan, or a car, the journey from Yangon to Ngwe Saung will take between 5-6 hours. The good news is that the government has spent a lot of money improving their infrastructure so the roads are much better than they used to be. This means that the ride will be far less bumpy and much more enjoyable than it was even five years ago.

Ngwe Saung is home to arguably one of Myanmar’s best beaches. This sleepy fishing village turned resort town is home to over 13 miles (~21km) of beautiful white sand beaches along the Bay of Bengal. One of its biggest draws is the fact that it is far less crowded than many other beaches in Southeast Asia, but it is just as stunning and still has many upmarket resorts as well as budget-friendly options to choose from.

The main areas to see are Ngwe Saung beach, Lover’s Island, and Ngwe Saung Village. The beach is the perfect spot to relax after spending time in the hectic city of Yangon. Ngwe Saung beach is the center of all of the action in town and the perfect spot to chill out.

Lover’s Island is another must-see. Located just off the beach, you can easily access this island on foot once the tide goes out. Be aware that there are some sharp rocks along the bottom of the sea, so good water shoes or sturdy sandals are recommended. Lover’s Island is a great place to go to watch the sunset over the ocean, so have your camera ready for the perfect instagrammable shots.

Ngwe Saung Village is also worth exploring. This is located at the north end of the beach and is home to shops and stalls selling clothing, accessories, and souvenirs. This is also where you can find cheap restaurants that serve delicious local meals and fairly priced seafood. This is a great alternative to eating at the fancy resorts along the beach.

How to get from Yangon to Ngwe Saung

By bus

One of the most popular ways to get from Yangon to Ngwe Saung is to travel by bus. Tickets cost around $10 per person and the journey takes approximately six hours. This makes the bus the cheapest and most convenient option to get from Yangon to the beach.

Buses generally depart between 6-7 am. The ride is actually quite scenic, so being stuck on the bus during the better part of your morning and afternoon isn’t too horrible when you can enjoy the views as you go. You will also arrive in Ngwe Saung around lunchtime, which is perfect for checking in to your accommodation.

This option is recommended if you are on a tight budget because the amenities are not the best. While the standard buses have A/C and will usually provide you with bottled water, the vehicles themselves can be quite old and the A/C may be pretty weak.

The bus companies generally allow you to bring one 20kg bag and your hand luggage on board, regardless of who you book with. Other amenities, including blankets, vary depending on the bus company. The seats on these buses are not the most comfortable, especially for longer journies or if you are on the taller side. Because the buses are a bit older the seats can feel a bit cramped and they often don’t recline, so be sure to pack your neck pillow to make sure you can get comfortable.

On the plus side the bus will make a few toilet stops throughout the six hour trip so you will be able to get out and stretch your legs.

By night bus

Another option to get from Yangon to Ngwe Saung is to take the night bus. This is a great choice if you want to save money as it is cheap and you get to skip booking a night’s accommodation as well.

The bus leaves from Hlaing Thar Yar station, about 45 minutes west of the center of Yangon. Asia Dragon and Golden Star are two reputable companies that drive this route and tickets generally cost between $10-16.

Asia Dragon buses depart at 10pm and arrive in Ngwe Saung at 4:30am. This is a great option because it is a direct route and doesn’t pick up additional passengers along the way. The

Golden Star bus leaves Yangon at 8:30pm and also arrives at 4:30am.

Both of these buses are traditional style coaches and are relatively comfortable. The bus usually does not have a bathroom on board but will make a few toilet stops along the way.

By minivan

If you are traveling with a large group of friends or if you prefer smaller vehicles, it is possible to book a minivan to get from Yangon to Nwge Saung. Hiring a standard minivan is essentially like a private transfer, which has room for up to nine people.

These minivans are more comfortable than most of the buses, as they have reclining seats,  working AC, and often provide you with bottled water. The drivers will also pick you up directly at your hotel in Yangon, which will save you to taxi ride out to the bus station.

The benefit of traveling from Yangon to Ngwe Saung is the fact that you are able to control your journey. You would negotiate pick up and drop off times and locations, as well as where and how long you stop. This is a great feature if you see a perfectly Instagrammable pagoda in Pathein or need frequent bathroom breaks after all of the delicious tea at breakfast.

Minivans also give you more privacy and the ability to spread out, rather than being jam packed on a bus. Riding in comfort does come with a hefty price tag, though, and a one way journey can cost up to $300. The price of the minivan is the same no matter how many people take the journey though, so find some people to split the cost if this sounds like it is worth it.

By car

Your final option to get from Yangon to Ngwe Saung is to travel by car. It is possible to rent a car as a foreigner in Myanmar, but it is important to understand that there is a lot of bureaucracy around doing so. Not many tourists have the patience with dealing with the rules and regulations imposed by the local authorities.

However, if you are determined to squeeze in a road trip while you are in Myanmar, there are a few important things you should know. If you do rent a car you are required to have a special permit and a local Burmese citizen with you in the car at all times.

If you can’t meet those requirements it is possible to hire a private car with a driver, but this is very expensive. It is about $300 each way for this option. You would be able to control your trip and get the same sense of adventure that a road trip allows, though. When traveling by car you are able to stop as often as you like, so having lunch in Pathwe or stopping off at a stall on the side of the road is definitely a possibility. If you have a bigger budget and prefer traveling in comfort, this may be the option for you.

Regardless of how you get there, Ngwe Saung will be a fantastic spot to relax for a few days.
