About the ride from Dubrovnik to Makarska

A trip to Dubrovnik should be on the list of anyone visiting Croatia. But after a few days of wandering the cobblestone alleys of Game of Thrones’ King’s Landing, it’s time to hit the road and explore the Dalmatian coast. The best way to do that is to take a trip from Dubrovnik to Makarska. Here’s how to do it.

For those of you who don’t know, Makarska is a port city on the iconic Croatian riviera. Tucked away behind a cluster of beautiful Adriatic islands, the town lends itself to some picture perfect seaside views.

To make the 153 km (95 mile) route from Dubrovnik to Makarska, you’ll have three options. Number one, you can take one of the direct bus lines, which should take you around 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can make the same journey by car.

Last but not least, you can hop on a ferry and make the trip along the scenic Dalmatian coast. This will take you around 3 hours.

What to see when traveling from Dubrovnik to Makarska

As you leave the old stone walls of Dubrovnik, you’ll be brought up close and personal with the beauty that is the Croatian coast. Heading west with the shimmering Adriatic on your left, the journey to Makarska is one that will constantly have you reaching for your camera.

If you’re navigating the road by car or going by bus, the meandering road will take you through a seemingly never ending row of charming seaside villages. Seriously, this is like a laid-back version of Côte d'Azur!

After about an hour on the road, you’ll come up to the border with Bosnia & Herzegovina. Wait, isn’t Makarska supposed to be in Croatia? It is, but a small portion of the Adriatic coast actually belongs to Bosnia. How much? About 12 miles – then there’s another border crossing and you’re back in Croatia.

If you’re going by car, you can choose to make a coffee break in any of the villages on your way, like the charming village of Blace next to the Neretva River delta – just sit back and enjoy the views.

On your approach to Makarska, you’ll be greeted by an endless row of pine trees. You won’t know it, but you’ll be passing close to some beautiful, cozy beaches. Take note because you might want to come back to them later!

The town of Makarska is among Croatia’s most beloved tourist destinations, and that’s saying a lot. It doesn’t get as many crowds as Dubrovnik, but it packs heaps of charm to rival its better known neighbor.

Makarska lies on a horseshoe shaped bay. Its sloping shoreline lends itself to picture perfect views of crystal clear bay waters, and the Dalmatian islands beyond. The town’s stone walkways are dotted with neat pine trees, and charming cafes. Makarska is well-known for its jazz and fine dining scene. Outside of town, the Biokovo National Park is home to miles of hiking trails that provide the very best views of the Riviera.
