After taking in all the history and culture of the Philippines in Vigan City, you’re probably ready for fast-paced Manila.

The capital city often gets a bad reputation. It can be chaotic and crowded, but Manila is also highly underappreciated.

Intramuros should be a stop on every traveler’s itinerary when they arrive in Manila. It’s the grid-like section of the city located within the thick 16th and 17th Century walls. It was the Spanish East Indies capital from the 1500s until 1898, and it has all the vibes of a colonial town. There are gorgeous churches, charming courtyards, and European architecture throughout.

Exploring the Bindondo neighborhood (Manila’s Chinatown) is another great way to spend an afternoon. Check out the fascinating Buddhist temples and delicious dim sum.

The city of Manila is situated right on Manila Bay, so make sure you stroll along the Baywalk. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun go down, listen to live street musicians and enjoy tasty snacks from vendors along the way.

If you are a history lover, Fort Santiago is another excellent place to visit. It was built in 1571 as a Spanish military base to protect its holdings in the east.

In addition to the interesting architecture and fascinating history here, you can also see where national hero José Rizal was imprisoned prior to his execution in 1896. There’s a shrine dedicated to his honor.

How to get from Vigan City to Manila

Land transport is the most popular way to get from Vigan City to Manila. You have the option to take a bus or hire a car to travel overland.

Bus

The tourist bus is the best way to travel from Vigan City to Manila if you consider price, convenience, and amenities. There are a few companies to choose from.

Partas Transportation Company operates a route from Vigan City to Manila which costs $22 per person and takes approximately seven hours.

It’s a great option because the buses are relatively new and comfortable. They also offer great amenities for longer journeys.

You can expect reclining seats, personal TVs, AC, and bathrooms on each bus. Partas also offers WiFi when it’s available and English-speaking staff to assist with ticket booking and transfers.

All of Partas’ departures are in the evening. The first bus leaves Vigan City at 19:30. This could be a good way to avoid paying for a night’s accommodation in Manila.

It is worth noting that these buses will drop you off at the Pasay Bus Terminal, which is not the most convenient location if you plan on staying in downtown Manila. Keep this in mind when budgeting, as you will have to take a taxi or a jeepney into town.

Farinas Transit also offers a bus journey from Vigan City to Manila. Tickets cost between $17-$19, and the trip takes about eight hours and thirty minutes.

Farinas sets itself apart because they offer a “deluxe” option that offers individual TVs in each seat and Lazyboy chairs. If you’d like to travel in style, select the 22:00 departure. The departure time is tied to a ticket class, so if you prefer a cheaper ticket, you will need to check the Farinas schedule to see what time that bus departs.

Farinas buses will drop you off at their terminal station, which is located in the north of Manila. You’ll need to keep this in mind when planning on how to get to your accommodation.

Aniceto also operates a route from Vigan City to Manila. Tickets cost between $15-$18, and the trip takes 11 hours.

Aniceto has similar amenities but no VIP or deluxe options. Other than the additional hours, the only thing that sets this company apart is they offer an 8 am departure. If you prefer leaving during the daytime. This may be the option for you.

Car

When considering how to get from Vigan City to Manila, there are private transfers available as well. These are very pricey, but if you have the option to split the cost with a few friends or family members, it may be worth it.

The benefit to hiring a private car is you would have the entire vehicle to yourself. This would also allow you to control the schedule.

The Philippines is known for so much delicious food, so if you see a stand on the side of the road with amazing-looking snacks, you’d be able to stop for a bite to eat if you hired a private car. You would also be able to stop for as many bathroom breaks as you need.

The best part about hiring a private car is the journey only takes five to six hours. This is a bit better than the seven + hours you would spend on the bus.

Anis Transport offers a private Economy Car transport service. This has room for up to five passengers, depending on how much luggage you have. Anis Transport rates start at $220 per car.

4J1Y Transport Service also offers two different car options. You could hire a two-person standard car for about $500 or an SUV for $700. The SUV can fit up to five people and has ample amounts of luggage space.

Obviously, this option is expensive, but when you think about how far from Vigan City to Manila you have to travel, it may be worth the extra expense.

Flight

Your final option to get from Vigan City to Manila is to fly. As mentioned, there is no airport in Vigan, so you would first have to take a bus to Laoag. From there you can fly directly to Manila.

Flights to Manila take about an hour and cost between $50 and $80. It is more expensive than the bus but cuts your travel time in half. Because the Vigan City to Manila distance is so great, flying may be a good option if your budget allows.
