About the ride from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta

Many travelers heading to Koh Lanta from Koh Phi Phi will be making the return trip after spending time on the much smaller island. As there's only one way to get on and off Koh Phi Phi - by ferry - you might well have met a few of the other passengers before or at least seen them around over the last few days. Snorkeling, scuba diving and island hopping are all great things to do on Koh Phi Phi but when you've got to leave, Koh Lanta provides an easy to reach exit route.

Standard and Tourist ferries take about an hour to cover the 32 kilometers (19 miles) distance between the islands whereas speedboats can zip you across in half the time. On larger vessels you'll have the chance to do a bit of sunbathing on the open top deck or chill out (literally) in the air-conditioned communal cabin down below. Standard and Tourist ferries also have an onboard bathroom and there may be a small snack and drink kiosk, but not always.

Speedboats often have semi-open sides as well as windows. This allows for lots of Andaman Sea breeze to rush through the cabin against a constant soundtrack of loud outboard motors. There are numerous daily departures (approximately 12) although some ferries won't run from May to September as it's low tourist season and the water is often quite rough at this time of year.

Once you arrive on Koh Lanta from Koh Phi Phi it's a good idea to have somewhere to go from Saladan Pier. If you've booked in advance, some hostels and snorkeling schools will send a member of staff to greet you at the harbor and transfer you and your bags to your accommodation. If you haven't booked anything, you can jump in a taxi or opt to go with an accommodation representative that's hanging out at the harbor. Top travel tip: Don't forget to ask prices before you get into a vehicle. Keep a note of the price, too, and make sure the driver is also aware of how much has been agreed before you've set off.

What to see when traveling from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta

The ferry ride from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta is a quick one as the distance between the islands is only 32 kilometers (19 miles). This means you might just have enough time to watch the waves whiz by from an open top deck or relax in a fully seated air-conditioned or side-open cabin.

Whilst on board you should see plenty of blue skies and sea swells as well as one or two uninhabited islands. These are great for sparking the imagination and you might well have visited a few of them if you opted for a long-tail boat tour whilst staying on Koh Phi Phi. Leaving the island can be quite an emotional experience as it's such a laid back and relaxing place to hang out.

However, if you've still got lots of time left to travel around other parts of southern Thailand then you might well be getting excited for the next leg of your adventure. And where better to start than Koh Lanta? Chat to other passengers and find out more about what you can expect or just flick open a travel guide book and begin to plot your next course.

How to get from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta

Taking a ferry

There's only one way to get from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta, and that's by ferry. However, there are three different types of ferry: Speed Boat, Standard and Tourist. Speedboats are smaller, and bumpier, and take 30 minutes from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta. Speedboats quite often have a compact sunbathing deck but the majority of seating is down below the top deck. Speedboat seating areas also have windows and open sides but no air-conditioning or onboard bathrooms.

Tourist ferries include a more spacious top deck as well as an air-conditioned seated area down below. They also have washrooms on board. Tourist class ferry rides are usually about an hour in total. Standard ferries are slightly more traditional looking than Tourist and Speed Boat ferries however, they're safe, affordable and fairly comfortable.

Standard ferries also arrive at Koh Lanta about an hour after leaving Koh Phi Phi. This leaves lots of time to find out more about some of your fellow travelers or just grab a cat nap before you eventually sail into Saladan Pier.
