About the ride from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi

Many travelers head to the island of Koh Phi Phi from Krabi looking for adventure. Many more are just into sand, sea and sunshine. Whatever floats your boat, there's only one way to get the island and that's by high-speed ferry or a speedboat.

There are eight companies operating in this stretch of the Andaman: Songserm, Andaman Wave, Chao Koh Group, Tigerline, Chureang Travel & Tour, Kanichta Speedboat and Phi Phi Logistic & Tour. All of the vessels that they provide are well-maintained and well-equipped with lifesaving gear.

The crossing itself is 37 kilometers (22 miles) and takes between an hour to two hours to complete. There are usually 11 ferry crossings each day although this number can drop outside of high season.

High season tends to run from November to April. This is when ferry seats can get booked very quickly. This is a busy time of year and queues at Krabi pier can be very disorganized and quite chaotic. Best advice is to arrive early and stand your ground when it comes to claiming your seat.

The speedboat service that's organized by Phi Phi Logistics & Tour is the most popular and the fastest way to get from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi. It only takes an hour. Prices start from US$30 per passenger and there are two daily sailings. One in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

The cheapest ferry from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi is the standard ferry run by Andaman Wave. Seat prices start from US$13. The standard ferry is a much larger boat. It's basically a proper ferry rather than a speedboat. Onboard you'll find air-conditioned seating, a bathroom and snack kiosk.

It takes about two hours to get to Koh Phi Phi onboard a standard ferry from Krabi. Basically, it's a much more relaxed ride. You can walk about, stretch your legs, and sunbathe on the top deck.

One thing that's worth taking into consideration is that the smaller the vessel the bumpier the ride. It can get choppy in this area, especially from March to October. It's a good idea to take sea sickness pills before you depart and bring a waterproof onboard to protect you from sea spray.

At this more unpredictable time of year, some ferries won't run at all. Always check the most up-to-date schedule first before assuming you'll be able to rock up and get a ticket. Also, make sure you arrive at Krabi Marina River pier at least 30 minutes before the designated departure time.

What to see when traveling from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi

It's a really exciting time to be heading off on a ferry from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi. All of those gorgeous south west Thailand images will be flashing through your mind, especially if you've literally just jumped off the bus from Bangkok.

Take your time to soak in the sights and sounds of the jetty. Fishermen will be sitting on the pier, kids might be playing off the dock, and world weary travelers will be lining up to clamber aboard a boat bound for the island.

Arriving early gives you a moment of calm to look around you and enjoy the experience. Once onboard a speedboat you'll be over to the island in under an hour. Grab every opportunity to look out the window or over the side as the boat zips over the deep blue waves.

If you're onboard a larger ferry you'll have more time to rest and relax. Read a book in the air-conditioned seating area or watch out the window as waves crash against the side. Alternatively, chat to fellow travelers and see where they're heading to and where they've already been.

As you approach Koh Phi Phi you'll get to see your first glimpse of the island. Camera at the ready you can watch from the top deck as you dock. Local harbour hands will be hard at work helping to tether the ferry to the pier. Other locals will be preparing for a fresh influx of eager visitors.

Knowing where you're going when you arrive on Koh Phi Phi is a good idea for retaining an element of calm. Sometimes it's nice though to just go with the flow. There will certainly be enough suitors at Ao Ton Sai pier to ensure you don't have to worry about finding lodgings.

How to get to Koh Phi Phi from Krabi

Taking a ferry

You'll usually find there are about eleven ferry crossings leaving from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi each day. These are operated by eight different boat companies: Songserm, Andaman Wave, Chao Koh Group, Tigerline, Chureang Travel & Tour, Kanichta Speedboat and Phi Phi Logistic & Tour.

Boats differ in size from nippy speedboats to larger ferries. The most popular way to get from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi is by the one hour speedboat ferry. This is run by Phi Phi Logistic & Tour. The least expensive option is the two hour standard ferry that's supplied by Andaman Wave.

Prices for Phi Phi Logistic & Tour's speedboat start from US$30. Whereas the slower standard ferry run by Andaman Wave offers seats at a rate of US$13 per passenger.

Whichever high-speed ferry or speedboat you opt for, you will be in safe hands. All vessels are frequently checked and have excellent safety records. Boats are modern and adhere to safety standards. Buoyancy aids, life saving equipment and suitable seating are all to be found onboard.

The weather can be a bit of an issue outside of the summer season. Winds tend to whip up the waves which means that some companies will operate a reduced service from March to October. In high season it can be quite the reverse. Boats can get overbooked and piers can be crowded.

Always make sure you book a seat in advance and arrive at least 30 minutes ahead of the designated departure just to confirm your space on the boat. There are usually, however, 11 crossings a day so you might not have to wait too long if you do actually miss your ride.

If you're setting sail on a zippy speedboat it can be a good idea to take a waterproof with you so you don't arrive soaked by sea spray. There are often, however, windows in place so you might not get too wet. But you never know! Sunscreen, too, is also a good idea. Especially on open top decks.
