There are several ways of getting to Can Tho from Ho Chi Minh City, including overnight bus, shared minivan, private car and private minivan. If you take the minivan right after breakfast, you might knock a few minutes off the 4 hour journey.
If you want to arrive with a full day in Can Tho ahead of you, take the overnight bus which arrives in the city early in the morning. However if you prefer to travel in the daytime, there are plenty of minivan departures throughout the day.
The drive to Can Tho is mostly along National Route One, a major highway running the length of Vietnam. However, the journey is still quite interesting, as you pass through the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City, and small cities and towns on the Mekong Delta like Ta An, Vinh Long and Bin Minh.
As you get closer to Can Tho, you’ll begin to see the flooded fields, waterways and palm-fringed plantations of the Delta. Just before arriving in Can Tho, you'll cross the Can Tho Suspension Bridge over the Mekong, with good views of the river.
The fastest way to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho is in a Limo Minivan by Loc Phat, which takes 3 hours and 45 minutes. This is a seat in a shared minivan, with departures throughout the day.
The cheapest way to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho is in a Limo Minivan by Loc Phat, which costs around $8.50 per person one-way. This is a seat in an air-conditioned minivan, which can collect you from your hotel and drop you in the center of Can Tho.
Bookaway customers prefer taking the Sleeping Bus by Futa Bus from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Can Tho. The bus departs every hour from Mien Tay Bus Station and the journey takes 4 hours.
Traveling by shared minivan will get you to Can Tho in the shortest amount of time and is convenient, with plenty of departures throughout the day. If your hotel is in central Ho Chi Minh City, the minivan may be able to pick you up.
If the minivan is full, the journey can feel a little cramped, but the driver will make stops so you can stretch your legs, use the bathroom and grab some snacks and water. When you arrive in Can Tho, the minivan may be able to drop you in the city centre.
The bus to Can Tho leaves Mien Tay Bus Station every hour, and the journey usually takes 4 hours. The bus is a ‘sleeping bus’, meaning you have more space to stretch out as the seats recline to almost-flat. This is great if you want to get some sleep on the journey. If you're tall, however, you might feel a little cramped, as the seats are designed for locals who are typically not as tall as Westerners.
The cabin is air-conditioned and can get chilly, so wear something warm. The driver will stop along the way so you can use the bathroom and grab some food. If you don't want to buy food from a roadside shop or restaurant then bring something with you for the journey.
The bus isn't the fastest way of getting to Can Tho, but if you prefer slow travel, and like looking out of the window during a journey, then it's a good choice.
If you’re a group of friends or a family, you might want to book private transportation. A private minivan for up to 9 passengers will collect you from your hotel or from the airport, and drop you at your hotel in Can Tho. This gives you the most flexibility, as you can leave whenever you want.
