The ultimate guide to island hopping in Thailand

Which islands to go to and how to hop around

Top islands in Suratthani

The islands of Suratthani are some of the more unique islands in all of Thailand. A 10 hour bus ride and then 3-6 hour ferry are between you and insanely tasty food, hidden waterfalls, and one of the biggest parties in the world.

For the least amount of rain and the most amount of sun, it is best to visit here between late December and April. The rest of the year will still be sunny and beautiful, because the islands are basically heaven on earth, but you will experience more showers.

Top islands in the eastern Gulf of Thailand

The eastern Gulf of Thailand is hot, hot, hot! However, with the heat, comes a simple life lived on dazzling islands with minimal traffic, making bicycles the preferred means of transport here.

Get here by taking a bus from Bangkok to Pattaya, and then taking a ferry to whichever island you have your sights set on. While Koh Chang is best visited between November and February, the rest of the islands are perfect until the end of April.

There are many viable transportation options in Thailand. The bus system is very dense and will get you to just about everywhere in the country. Equally as popular is the minivan system.

The country’s trains serve the majority of the country, but won’t get you directly to destinations like Phuket, Sukhothai and of course, the islands.

To get to the islands or up and down the coast, there are several different ferry and boat options that are available multiple times a day.

Thailand boasts a whopping twenty airports, all of which have at least one connection in Bangkok.

Within the cities themselves, especially Bangkok, you have the option to catch a tuk-tuk, a taxi, buses, metro, skytrain, and boats that run along the city’s canals. Be sure to download the ride-hailing app Grab, as Uber does not work in Thailand.

The weather in Thailand varies not only by time of year, but also by region.

If you want to visit the entire country in one go, then visiting sometime between the end of November and the end of April would be your best bet, as the rainy season typically starts in July and lasts through October.

That being said, May can sometimes see storms as well. Otherwise, this is what you should keep in mind:

  • Thailand’s beaches: Between December and the end of February, when it is less humid, temperatures aren’t scorching, and you may be blessed with a lovely, evening breeze.
  • Northern Thailand: Between November and February. Daytime temperatures can reach up to about 33 degrees Celsius (92 degrees Fahrenheit), but evenings are cool, often requiring a sweater.
  • Southern Thailand: Between November and early April. The west coast is best during the winter, as it’s best for diving and snorkeling. The east coast, on the other hand is typically good for most of the year, with the highest rainfall in November.
