Marmaris to Rhodes

If you are holidaying in Marmaris, you can’t miss the opportunity to visit the Greek island of Rhodes.

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, a series of over 150 islands in the Aegean Sea between Turkey and Greece. These stunning islands are known for their medieval castles, Byzantine churches, beautiful beaches, and fascinating ancient archeological sites.

A day trip from Marmaris to Rhodes is a great way to explore these fantastic sites. However, you might find you want more time there than just a day.

Rhodes has everything you need to have a fantastic Greek experience: deep-rooted history, long-standing traditions, and gorgeous beaches.

One of the best things to do in Rhodes is to explore the ancient Acropolis of Lindos. After exploring Lindos village, follow the road that leads up the 116 meters (380 feet) high rock to see the absolutely stunning Acropolis, complete with a temple, battlements, and city walls. Exploring these ruins makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. And you’ll get some stunning views from the top, so make sure you have your camera ready.

Historic Rhodes Old Town is also worth a visit. It’s close to the Ferry Terminal, so you can easily fit it in right when you arrive. Just be careful – everyone else may have the same idea.

Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage City, which happens to be the largest medieval city in Europe.

There are so many amazing beaches on Rhodes, and it would be a shame not to visit one while you’re there. Agios Pavlos is a fantastic, chilled-out spot if you’re looking for a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the amazing Aegean Sea. Don’t worry though, Anthony Quinn Bay is another option if you prefer a more lively spot with beach bars and a buzzy atmosphere.

While on Rhodes, there will be plenty to keep you entertained. From museums to walking tours to exploring medieval castles, you are bound to find something you’ll love. Just make sure you leave enough time to eat as much delicious Greek food as possible!

About the trip from Marmaris to Rhodes

The distance from Marmaris to Rhodes is a mere 47 kilometers (approximately 29 miles) across the Aegean Sea.

The trip is simple and straightforward. You’ll leave from the Marmaris Cruise Port and arrive at the Ferry Terminal in Rhodes regardless of which ferry or catamaran you book. You may be wondering how long is the ferry from Marmaris to Rhodes? It is only an hour from port to port, so even if you’re not thrilled about the idea of traveling by sea, this option is very doable.

The journey is usually pleasant, but as with any ferry ride, the seas can be unpredictable, and it’s best to come prepared with seasickness tablets just in case.

The main thing to remember about the trip is that you will be leaving Turkey and entering Greece. Because of this, you will need to ensure that you have your passport with you and your visa documents squared away. However, if you are an EU citizen, you don’t need a visa for Turkey or Greece.

Greece is part of the Schengen area, so you should check your country of origin’s requirements on whether or not you need a Schengen Visa to enter Greece.  A visa may be mandatory even if you are only visiting Rhodes on a day trip.

You will clear immigration when leaving Turkey in Marmaris and again when entering Greece upon arrival in Rhodes. If you’re lucky, this process can be quick, especially if you’re one of the first people off your ferry from Marmaris to Rhodes. However, it can also be a long and tedious process if a massive cruise ship is processing its passengers ahead of you.

Because you have no real control over the lines in customs, you may want to stay in Rhodes overnight to guarantee you see all the sights on your bucket list. Otherwise, customs and immigration could eat up a lot of time on your day trip.

How to get from Marmaris to Rhodes

The only feasible option to get from Marmaris to Rhodes is to take a ferry.

Unfortunately, flight tickets to Rhodes are unrealistic. You would have to fly back to Istanbul and have an additional layover in Frankfurt or Athens, causing your journey to last upwards of 14 hours in some cases.

The Marmaris to Rhodes ferry is a much simpler option, so it’s recommended. There are a few companies to choose from, so your best bet is to select the one that fits within your budget and has the most convenient times for your travel schedule.

Economy Ferry

The economy ferry is a catamaran that takes approximately one hour and costs $50 for a one-way ticket. Return tickets are an option as well, and the ferry operates from 9 am to 5 pm. However, it is always a good idea to check the Marmaris to Rhodes ferry schedule to make sure there is a boat running at the time you need.

The ferry is a great option. The seats are relatively comfortable, and it drops you off at the Rhodes port. Going through customs is a straightforward process, and it’s easy to organize transportation to whatever site you would like to explore.

These ferries have a bathroom and have AC. You’re generally allowed to bring up to 20kg of luggage, so an economy ferry is a good option if you plan on staying in Rhodes for a while or if you are passing through on your way to another Greek island.

Car Ferry

Another option is to take the Car Ferry with Yesil Marmaris Lines. These Marmaris to Rhodes ferry prices are around $83 per ticket for an open return or $47 for a one-way/same-day return.

If you want to bring your car to explore Rhodes, the car ferry is the way to go. On one hand, it would be more of a hassle since there is one departure per week, and it takes two hours and 30 minutes instead of one hour with the economy ferry. However, if you plan on staying on Rhodes for an extended time, this could be a better choice.

No matter which option you choose, you are guaranteed to have a fantastic time exploring Rhodes. For sure, you’ll want to continue exploring the Dodecanese Islands and experience as much Greek hospitality as possible. But, of course, the ouzo and those stunning sunsets don’t hurt either!
