About the ride from San Juan, La Union to Manila

Most travelers taking the bus ride from San Juan, La Union to Manila will be returning to the Philippines' capital after enjoying a vacation by the beach. The journey south usually takes just over four hours with the earliest bus leaving around 3.30 in the afternoon and the latest departing at 10pm at night. The best advice is to get to Sebay Surf Central bus station at least 30 minutes before departure so as to avoid a mad rush and inevitable walk of shame if you're last down the aisle.

Seat prices aren't very much money and you shouldn't expect to pay more than US $20 for a single ticket. Sometimes you can get even cheaper tickets if you book for two people at the same time. Buses come in two different classes: Standard and Tourist. The Tourist type of bus tends to have a television, bathroom and Wi-Fi access on board, whereas the Standard Bus will make a bathroom break on route. Both types of buses are air-conditioned and have reclining seats. There are around four departures each day from San Juan, La Union to Manila but you're advised to book in advance, especially during high season which is from March through to May.

As San Juan is a well known surfers' paradise, your fellow passengers might well be looking for the next wave. Chatting about where you've been and where you plan to go next is all part of the overland travel experience. You'll probably still have sand between your toes, and elsewhere, but the closer you get to Manila, the more you'll need to get switched on to a city frame of mind.

The Philippines' capital can be a crazy place and it helps to have your wits about you, especially if you've not got any accommodation already booked before you arrive. Many bus passengers will automatically head directly to the airport no sooner than they arrive; however, if you've got plans to stay for one or two days then you might be pleasantly surprised at what lies in store. From a variety of tasty treats at the city's street food stalls to cultural enlightenment at San Agustin Church, there's much more to Manila than just a means of moving on elsewhere.

What to see when traveling from San Juan, La Union to Manila

Waving goodbye to the waves at San Juan, La Union can be a real wrench, especially if you've just enjoyed a vacation of sun, sea and surf. However, the bright lights of Manila are beckoning from 277 kilometers (172 miles), so grab your shades and sunhat and clamber aboard for a four hour bus ride south.

The scenery just outside of San Juan is mainly agricultural with several small villages offering a glimpse of cottage industries making pots, baskets and concrete blocks. If you're still awake after the previous night's shenanigans at the beach bar you can also expect to see fields of corn as well as the occasional collection of cattle. The closer you get to Manila, the more the fields either side of the highway turn to concrete city suburbs. This is where everyday local folk live and many will travel to the nearest Metro station to get in and out of the city on their daily commute.
