About the ride from Hoi An to Mui Ne

The journey from Hoi An to Mui Ne is a classic long-distance route in Vietnam, and the best method is by sleeper bus.

Some travelers swear by sleeper buses. They’re an affordable, exciting and fun way to travel while spying some of the country’s most iconic roadside scenes.

In addition, you may make some new friends!

Sleeper buses give you even more chances to save money as you travel since you won’t be shelling out for accommodation. Just bear in mind, though, this isn’t going to be the most comfortable of beds. We’re talking a reclining seat, not a four-poster.

Train travel also exists in Vietnam. However, it often takes longer than a sleeper bus and is also more expensive. The best thing about taking the train is you get to meet local people and can walk around. Make sure to pack a few things to do to pass the time.

To travel from Hoi An to Mui Ne, a daily bus service leaves in the late afternoon and arrives early in the morning. It’s a 13-hour overland trip taking you across 725 kilometers (450 miles) of rural and coastal roads.

Sleeper buses on this route are clean, comfortable and air-conditioned. You also get a free blanket to keep you warm and cozy through an otherwise chilly night. Seats are actually really comfortable and recline practically horizontally to ensure a good night’s rest.

Another way to get some rest on a sleeper bus to Mui Ne is to bring some earplugs, an eye mask and a travel cushion. Alternatively, just plug in your favorite tunes and watch the world whiz by your window. It will be dark, obvs, but you’ll still see a few bright lights.

Tickets for sleeper bus transport from Hoi An to Mui Ne start from as little as US$18. This is an incredibly cheap deal, especially when you consider you’re not paying for a hotel. Strong Vietnamese coffee on arrival is all you need to start the day.

Taking the train is another option for this route, but it’s pretty convoluted. Basically, you have to travel from Hoi An to Da Nang first and then take the train to Muong Mai, about an hour’s taxi ride from Mui Ne.

Tickets for the train are around US$65, and the journey lasts about 16 hours. So it’s not the best way to get from Hoi An to Mui Ne.

What to see when traveling from Hoi An to Mui Ne

Ok, so you’re gonna be traveling at night if you’re taking a sleeper bus. This means you’re not going to be merrily driving past sun-drenched rice paddies and dense forests of bamboo. You will, however, drive by a few brightly lit roadside service stations—very exciting!

Also, let’s not forget, Vietnam’s coastal towns and cities don’t close down until the wee hours of the night. So as your sleeper bus rumbles by, you might see a few night markets and decorated street food stalls as well as a few glowing neon signs.

The most scenic stretch of distance from Hoi An to Mui Ne will be as you leave the ancient city and travel south. You’ll be traveling along the central coast and might even get to see the sunset over the South China Sea.

Also, if you’re lucky, you might get to see the sunrise just as you’re making your way around the rural roads en route to Mui Ne. This can be a gorgeous time of the morning. Made all the more exciting since your journey is finally coming to an end.

How to get from Hoi An to Mui Ne

Taking a sleeper bus from Hoi An to Mui Ne

The best way to travel from Hoi An to Mui Ne is by sleeper bus. Buses are run by local company, Hanh Café, and cost next to nothing for a ticket. Fully reclining seats are comfortable, and you’ll also be able to get food and drinks on board.

One daily departure rides through the night and stops off along the way at service stations for bathroom breaks and refuel. One thing worth noting on this route is that the bus also stops in Nha Trang for a couple of hours.

Taking a train from Hoi An to Mui Ne

Although it’s also possible to take the train through central Vietnam, it’s not the most convenient way to get from Hoi An to Mui Ne. Basically, it’s not a direct route. You first have to travel to Da Nang and then onwards to Muong Mai.

This leaves you with a further hour’s travel to get to Mui Ne. But, hey, it’s a great way to see Vietnam if you’ve got time, and money, to spare.

And that’s how to get from Hoi An to Mui Ne. In our eyes, there’s only one way to travel, but if you fancy walking, taking a rickshaw or jumping on the back of a motor scooter, then go for it! It’ll be one heck of an adventure!
