About the ride from Ranong to Koh Phayam

This short but very sweet ride across the Andaman Sea takes you offshore to one of Thailand’s lesser-known islands. Located close to Myanmar, Koh Phayam blends old-school Burmese charm with a laid-back Thai lifestyle to give you a secret hot spot to really savor.

As the distance from Ranong to Koh Phayam is just 19 kilometers (11 miles), you can get to the island in under an hour by boat. Several ferry operators are working the route, offering quick and easy transportation to suit holiday makers and backpackers alike.

Ferry types range from the rather rustic open-air ferry run by Tai Kak Pier to the more contemporary speedboat ferry run by Nava Andaman. Other speedboat ferry operators in the area include Fame Tours & Service and Fufaung Travel.

According to Bookaway customers, the best way to get from Ranong to Koh Phayam is by the standard ferry organized by Fame Tours & Service. The crossing only takes 45 minutes, with costs per passenger starting from as little as US$9.

The standard ferry is very modern looking, although it can be quite a noisy ride due to a couple of massive outboard motors. There’s a bathroom and barely padded bench seats, which do nothing but ensure you feel every lump and bump of the Andaman’s wave.

If you’re looking for an even cheaper mode of transport from Ranong to Koh Phayam, then Tai Kak Pier’s open-air ferry is your best bet. Tickets can be purchased at the Ranong bus station and cost as little as US$6 per person.

The only drawback of the open-air ferry is that it takes a couple of hours to make the crossing. The wooden bench seats aren’t all that comfortable either. However, if you’ve got nowhere to get to quickly, this is the one for you.

There are numerous Ranong to Koh Phayam ferry boats leaving throughout the day. However, it’s still a relatively undiscovered region for tourists, so make sure you enjoy the laid-back ambiance and inexpensive ticket costs while you can.

What to see when traveling from Ranong to Koh Phayam

There are several small islands that you’ll pass on the ferry crossing from Ranong to Koh Phayam, including Pulo and Ko Chang, Ranong. These are mainly densely forested, and you might also be able to see some rustic white-sand beach resorts dotted along the shore.

The slower open deck ferry is certainly the best mode of transport for taking in the scenery. There’s plenty of time to stare out over the Andaman waves and maybe catch a glimpse of a flying fish or something larger appearing above the water.

Elsewhere you’ll be able to see traditional fishing boats scudding around the coastlines as well as plenty of activity at both Ranong and Koh Phayam piers. These are often the most interesting moments in the crossing, thanks to the mix of tourists, locals and smiling kids.

Of course, what you’ll see throughout this trip will depend on what time you leave. For example, early morning sailings may be accompanied by a glorious technicolor sunrise. In contrast, the same can often be said for evening departures as the sun sets into the horizon.

How to get from Ranong to Koh Phayam

Taking a slow ferry from Ranong to Koh Phayam

The open-air ferry run by Tai Kak Pier is the best way to travel from Ranong to Koh Phayam if you like to save money and take your time. The ride takes at least a couple of hours and gives you ample opportunities to chat with fellow passengers along the way.

Although rather rustic, the slow ferry is very safe and provides a more authentic Thai traveling experience. In addition, it will get you in the mood for lazy, laid-back days spent at the beach.

One downside is that there’s only one slow ferry leaving each day. So make sure you get to Ranong Pier at least 30 minutes before the designated departure to ensure you get a seat. You’ll also be able to bag the best seat as soon as passengers are allowed to climb aboard.

Taking a fast ferry from Ranong to Koh Phayam

There are several speedboat ferries to help you get from Ranong to Koh Phayam in less than 45 minutes. These ferries depart throughout the day and are run by several different companies. Ticket prices aren’t all that steep, and some boats even have bathrooms onboard.

Just remember, the faster the ride, the choppier the sea. If you’re a little bit unsure about how you’ll deal with bumpy conditions, be prepared with seasickness tablets and a bottle of water. Also, try to avoid drinking too much booze the night before you set sail, just to be on the safe side!

And that’s how to get from Ranong to Koh Phayam. If you’re looking for more information about either location, do your research first before setting off. There will be plenty of time to enjoy a good read at the airport, so pack a Thai guide book and don’t forget your sticky notes to label the pages!
