About the ride from Zadar to Rijeka

Croatia’s “third city” is located in the north of the country along the coast of the Adriatic. The distance from Zadar to Rijeka is about 250 km (~ 158 miles)  if you are driving, but only 175 km (~108 miles) if you travel by ferry. 

The trip itself will take between three and four hours, depending on how you choose to travel. Driving is the quickest, at three hours, especially if you don’t make many stops along the way. 

Taking the bus is about a four-hour journey. However, it’s a great option because the last portion of the trip is pretty scenic and winds along the Adriatic coast. 

The ferry takes around four hours and 15 minutes, but it’s a great way to spend the morning working on your tan and checking out more of the country. After all, Croatia is home to 1000 islands!

No matter how you choose to get from Zadar to Rijeka, the ride is pretty easy. The roads are in good condition, buses and ferries are well maintained, and you’ll have sweet views along the way! What more do you need? 

Pro Tip – whether you travel by bus, ferry or car, grab a window seat. You’ll have great views of the sea and all the small towns and villages dotted along the way. 

 

How to get from Zadar to Rijeka

You have a few options to get from one stunning Croatian city to the next. Transport from Zadar to Rijeka is pretty straightforward. You can take a bus or a ferry, or if you feel confident driving, you can hire a car and drive yourself. 

 

Bus

Autotrans by Arriva operates a bus route that will get you to Rijeka. This is a standard coach bus, seating up to 50 or so passengers. Often, though, the bus is only about half full, so you will have the opportunity to stretch out.

The Zadar to Rijeka bus is a great way to travel if you’re on a budget or prefer to save your money for activities or local delicacies once you arrive. Tickets start at $26 per person and include a few great amenities, like bathrooms on board, AC, reclining seats, WiFi, and charging ports on many of the buses.

You can bring one large bag weighing up to 25 kgs and a carry-on. Additional luggage can be purchased for a small fee, usually $2 per piece. 

Autotrans by Arriva has two departures to Rijeka each day at 12:45 and 16:00. The ride takes about four and a half hours and includes a few rest stops along the way.  

Cazmatrans also operates a route from Zadar to Rijeka. They have a few more departures each day, starting at 8:15 am. The bus costs about the same, but luggage is not included. Expect to pay 7 KN (about $1) per bag. 

This company makes a few more stops, so the ride can take up to five hours depending on how many passengers they need to pick up along the way. 

 

Ferry

If you’re a ferry fan, the best way to get from Zadar to Rijeka is definitely the 8 am ferry with G & V Lines. It gets you in right in time for lunch.

Ferry tickets cost around $40 and guarantee you a comfortable seat on the ship. 

Ferries have AC, restrooms, and snack bars to purchase food and drinks throughout the journey. You can bring a 20 kg suitcase or bag with you, which is a great luggage allowance for a ferry.

If you have a bicycle, you are welcome to bring it on board for a small fee. Just make sure you have Croatian Kuna to pay the surplus. You’ll need cash for any purchases on the ferry, so hit the ATM before you board.

The trip will take about four hours and 15 minutes to get from one port to the next. 

Make sure you select your date carefully. Once you book your ferry ticket, you can change or cancel it, but you’ll be required to pay a 50% cancelation fee. 

Pro Tip – book early. The ferry fills up, and tickets sell out, especially during the high season, in summer. You don’t want to be left without a seat!

Note that the ferry only runs from June 1-September 30. If you plan to travel outside these months, you’ll need to take the bus or hire a car.

 

Car

If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a car and drive yourself from Zadar to Rijeka. 

Hiring your own car is very easy to do in Croatia. All you need is to be at least 21 years old and have a driver’s license from your home country. If you meet these requirements, you’re good to go!

Cars range in price and vary drastically depending on the season and how early you book. If you think a road trip is for you, book early! This could save you upwards of $20 a day.

The drive takes about three hours. As an added bonus, you’ll have control over where and how often you stop. This means if you see an adorable coastal town and want to have lunch, you can pull over.

Road conditions in Croatia are great, and it’s a safe country to drive in. This makes road tripping a great way to travel. In fact, hiring a car may just be the best way to travel from Zadar to Rijeka. Especially if you have the cash in your budget and want to see as much of Croatia as possible.
