About the ride from Koh Lanta to Phuket

After spending some well deserved relaxation time on the island of Koh Lanta, it's time to head west to Phuket where you can experience more of the same alongside visits to the Big Buddha monument and colonial Portuguese properties. The ride from Koh Lanta to Phuket takes just a couple of hours by Speedboat or High Speed Ferry and a lot longer by Standard or Tourist ferries. The actual distance is about 80 kilometers (49 miles) and there are usually somewhere in the region of eight departures each day, with prices starting from as little as US$17.

You can also board a bus at one of numerous pick up points in Koh Lanta that will take you directly onto the ferry. These sorts of bus-ferry rides are very efficient and alleviate a lot of the hassle of heading to the harbor with heavy luggage in tow. Alternatively, you can book a minivan or private car to take you to the ferry or, if you want to save money, you can just book a seat on the ferry and make your way down to Saladan Pier on foot.

Once on board the boat you can either get set for a speedy, and bumpy, ride across the Andaman Sea or a more leisurely journey. It all depends which type of ferry you prefer. Just remember to bring your own food and drink as this won't always be available on board.

What to see when traveling from Koh Lanta to Phuket

Speedboat ferries usually take just a couple of hours to make the ride from Koh Lanta to Phuket. These types of boats are often open at the back but enclosed with a roof and side windows. Some also have a small outside deck on top. Alongside splashing white water, you can expect to see green-clad islands and the occasional slither of white sand. Larger vessels, such as Standard ferries, might also have outdoor seating on the top deck and air-conditioned communal cabins on the lower deck.

These will take much longer to make the journey than speed boats but do offer a good opportunity to catch up on some rest after partying the night away in Koh Lanta, just a few hours before. Alternatively, you can just stare wistfully out over the Andaman Sea and let your imagination run wild as islands appear on the horizon and shadows appear underwater.

Early starts allow you to watch the sunrise over the ocean waves as you leave Koh Lanta's Saladan Pier; whereas sunsets on the approach to Rassada Pier in Phuket always make for an enchanted entrance to raise expectation levels even higher.

How to get from Koh Lanta to Phuket

Taking a ferry

The ride from Koh Lanta to Phuket can be fairly lengthy and you can expect to be enjoying life on the Andaman Sea for at least five hours if you're traveling by Standard Ferry. Many of which also include a rest and transfer stop in Koh Phi Phi. It's certainly a good idea to bring supplies on board as there isn't usually anywhere to buy food on any of the ferries. Arriving early at Saladan Pier in Koh Lanta means you'll be able to get the pick of the seating options.

These usually include sunbathing positions on the upper deck or cool air-conditioned seating in the communal cabin down below. Sun block, hat and shades are a must if you're up top whereas long sleeves and woolly socks are very handy on lower decks. You'll also find bathrooms on board. Speedboat ferries are a lot faster but don’t always have outside seating or air-conditioning. They can be open at the back and the ride can be quite bumpy.

Taking a bus\ferry

The easiest way to get to Phuket from Koh Lanta is by the Bus-Ferry combo as it takes you directly from the bus pick up point and places you right on the ferry. You won't be spending much time on board the bus but it's a good opportunity to meet a few of your fellow travelers before you've all clambered aboard the boat. This is a really stress-free way to travel and saves you the time and energy needed to lug your rucksack down to the harbor all by yourself.

Taking a minivan

If you're traveling in a small group you could opt for a private minivan to take you to the ferry terminal. Minivans can also be shared with other travelers. This saves on costs and invites you to get to know some new people before you step foot on the ferry from Koh Lanta to Phuket.  Standard and VIP minivans are available and both include air conditioning. Shared minivan rides will usually leave at a set time whereas hiring your own minivan means you can depart whenever you like.

Driving with a private car

If you're traveling as a couple or you prefer being on your own you can hire a private car with a driver that will take you directly from your hotel's front door all the way to the ferry pier. This option is a little more expensive than a shared minivan or a bus but it does give you peace, quiet and plenty of privacy. Also, private cars are well known for being reliable and punctual – good to know if you've got to get to the ferry, fast.
