About the ride from Drake Bay to Sierpe

Some of Costa Rica's best nature can be found in this region, so after visiting Corcovado National Park in Drake Bay – one of our planet's most biodiverse places – don't rush to head back to civilization.

Sierpe is commonly used as a transit spot between Drake Bay and San Jose. It's where the bus and ferries connect, but Sierpe has a few hidden gems of its own.

Stick around and explore this small town in the South Puntarenas area, where you'll find few tourists. The Térraba-Sierpe National Wetlands are not too far away, and it's Latin America's biggest reserve of mangroves. Most people have no idea all of this is there!

Luckily, getting from Drake Bay to Sierpe in Costa Rica is simple as there's only one way to do it: by boat.

The journey takes 1.5 hours, leaving from Drake Bay and arriving at Sierpe Port.

Enjoy the ride in a small speedboat that takes you through meandering canals surrounded by nothing but jungle. It's a great chance to spot wildlife!

This trip from Drake Bay to Sierpe matches the vibe of both towns – chilled and picturesque. Soak up every minute of it!

  2. Kayaking in the mangroves: Rent a kayak and paddle through the waterways of Latin America's biggest mangrove reserve. This area is thriving with wildlife, making it feel like you're on a mangrove safari. Search for monkeys swinging from the trees, birds soaring through the skies and reptiles soaking up the sun. But also watch the water for alligators and caimans!

Top tip: Check if your accommodation or kayak rental has binoculars to get a glimpse of the birds and reptiles up close!

  1. Hiking: Explore the area by foot, taking on one of the many trails that wind through the lush jungle. This is a great way to do some birdwatching and get a sweat on!

  2. Sportfishing: Both Drake Bay and Sierpe are popular destinations for sportfishing enthusiasts. Charter a boat and try your luck at catching sailfish, marlin, dorado, and tuna in the abundant waters of the Pacific Ocean. Even if you don't catch anything, a day at sea is always fun!

  3. Corcovado National Park: Most people travel to Drake Bay primarily for this amazing park. But if you haven't been, don't worry. You can also visit from Sierpe, and trust us, it's one you don't want to miss.

When is the best time to visit Sierpe?

For the best weather, visit Sierpe during the dry season, from December to April. During these months, sunny days are almost guaranteed, plus temperatures are pleasant, averaging 27-32°C (80-90°F).

It's a great time for snorkeling and diving, as the water visibility is excellent.

Don't completely write off May to July. While you should expect some heavy rains, the weather almost always cheers up and gives you ample opportunity for exploring. And as you'd be visiting outside peak tourist season, you can score great deals on accommodation and tours.

If seeing humpback whales is on your bucket list, brave the rains and visit between July and early October, when sightings of mothers and their babies are almost guaranteed!

How many days should you spend in Sierpe?

Sierpe is only a small village, but the adventures are epic. This is an awesome place to immerse yourself in nature without too many other tourists doing the same.

We recommend making the most of this unique experience and staying for at least two days, even longer, if you have time!

Where should you visit after Sierpe?

After Sierpe, many people head back to San Jose, the country's transportation hub, to hop over to their next destination. Sierpe to San Jose takes around six hours.

Not quite ready for a journey that long? Head to Uvita, a place that not everyone visits in Costa Rica. It's home to a whale-shaped beach, waterfalls and incredible snorkeling spots.
