Taking a bus from San Jose to La Fortuna

About the ride from San Jose to La Fortuna
Youâve eaten your way through the streets of San Jose. Taken in all the museums. Learned about the history of Costa Rica. And youâve checked out the craft beer selection. Now, itâs time to delve into the natural world that the country is famous for. But you have to leave the capital for that.Â
So where to? La Fortuna is your next logical step.Â
Lucky for you, itâs only 3 to 4.5 hours away. You can ride in a minivan or hire a private car to get the job done. Either way, itâs a comfy ride in an air-conditioned vehicle. Itâs about 100 miles (161 km), so sit back and enjoy the ride.Â
Below are all the details you need to decide which mode of transportation is best for you. On this route, it really comes down to budget and comfort.Â
Five thrilling activities to do in La Fortuna
La Fortuna may be small, but there is no shortage of exhilarating things to do there.Â
Visit La Fortuna Waterfall. One of Costa Ricaâs most stunning waterfalls, this 246-foot cascade is worth the hike. Itâs best to get there early to beat the crowds and be ready for a lot of steps. Waterproof shoes are a must.
Hike an active volcano in Arenal National Park. Arenal Volcano became famous after its eruption in 1968. But it hasnât erupted since 2010. Hiking is perfectly safe. The hike takes you through rugged terrain and lava fields, offering incredible views of the forest and the surrounding landscapes.
Soar through the trees like a monkey on a zipline tour. There are loads of tour operators for soaring above the treetops and enjoying stunning birdâs-eye rainforest views. If youâre up for the thrill, this is the best way to see the area from above.
Go white-water rafting around Lake Arenal. The rivers have class II to IV rapids, making it perfect for newbies and experienced rafters. As you navigate the river, youâll be surrounded by lush rainforest and stunning volcanic views. Some operators combine rafting with nights at an eco-lodge along the river. Itâs the ideal way to relax in nature after your adventure.
Relax in a hot spring. After all those adrenaline-fueled adventures, youâre going to need to unwind in one of La Fortunaâs hot springs. For a peaceful experience, try visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.
How to get from San Jose to La Fortuna
Youâll drive northwest about 100 miles to get from San Jose to La Fortuna. You can choose between a modern minivan or a car to make the journey easy.
By minivan
Duration: 2.5-4.5 hours
Starting price: $43Â
One of the perks of taking a minivan is the door-to-door service. You can get picked up from your hotel in San Jose or the Juan SantamarĂa International Airport (SJO) and dropped off at your hotel in La Fortuna. That takes all the guesswork out of your travels.Â
All minivans are modern with air conditioning and include a luggage allowance of (44-55 lbs/20-25 kg, depending on the operator). Some provide water, WiFi, charging points, and reclining seats.Â
The thing about a shared minivan is that youâre not the only one getting picked up or dropped off. Your ride could take a bit longer if there are 10 people and they all have different departure and arrival points.
There are several departures times throughout the morning and early afternoon. Â
If youâre traveling in a big group and want your own ride, hire a private minivan. Prices start at $180 for the whole van.Â
Youâll get all the same perks as above, but it gives you exclusive use of the van. You decide on the departure time and any stops along the way. Want to snag a picture of those lush mountains? No problem. Need a bathroom break? No problem. Just want to take a break to stretch your legs? A private minivan has you covered.
By private car
Duration: 3-4 hours
Starting price: $292 per car
As youâd expect, hiring a private car is more expensive, but it offers convenience, privacy, and comfort.Â
The cars are all air-conditioned SUVs; no Costa Rican terrain is too tough to handle. Although itâs unlikely youâll be on any rough roads on this trip. Itâs a well-paved route.Â
Just like with the minivan, youâll have door-to-door service from the airport or hotel in San Jose to your hotel in La Fortuna.Â
Private cars can accommodate up to three or four people, making them ideal for families or small groups. They have a flat fee, so you can split the cost between your group.Â
