So where to? La Fortuna is your next logical step. 

Lucky for you, it’s only 3 to 4.5 hours away. You can ride in a minivan or hire a private car to get the job done. Either way, it’s a comfy ride in an air-conditioned vehicle. It’s about 100 miles (161 km), so sit back and enjoy the ride. 

Below are all the details you need to decide which mode of transportation is best for you. On this route, it really comes down to budget and comfort. 

Five thrilling activities to do in La Fortuna

La Fortuna may be small, but there is no shortage of exhilarating things to do there. 

1. Visit La Fortuna Waterfall. One of Costa Rica’s most stunning waterfalls, this 246-foot cascade is worth the hike. It’s best to get there early to beat the crowds and be ready for a lot of steps. Waterproof shoes are a must.
   
   

2. Hike an active volcano in Arenal National Park. Arenal Volcano became famous after its eruption in 1968. But it hasn’t erupted since 2010. Hiking is perfectly safe. The hike takes you through rugged terrain and lava fields, offering incredible views of the forest and the surrounding landscapes.
   
   

3. Soar through the trees like a monkey on a zipline tour. There are loads of tour operators for soaring above the treetops and enjoying stunning bird’s-eye rainforest views. If you’re up for the thrill, this is the best way to see the area from above.
   
   

4. Go white-water rafting around Lake Arenal. The rivers have class II to IV rapids, making it perfect for newbies and experienced rafters. As you navigate the river, you’ll be surrounded by lush rainforest and stunning volcanic views. Some operators combine rafting with nights at an eco-lodge along the river. It’s the ideal way to relax in nature after your adventure.
   
   

5. Relax in a hot spring. After all those adrenaline-fueled adventures, you’re going to need to unwind in one of La Fortuna’s hot springs. For a peaceful experience, try visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.

How to get from San Jose to La Fortuna

You’ll drive northwest about 100 miles to get from San Jose to La Fortuna. You can choose between a modern minivan or a car to make the journey easy.

By minivan

Duration: 2.5-4.5 hours

Starting price: $43 

One of the perks of taking a minivan is the door-to-door service. You can get picked up from your hotel in San Jose or the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and dropped off at your hotel in La Fortuna. That takes all the guesswork out of your travels. 

All minivans are modern with air conditioning and include a luggage allowance of (44-55 lbs/20-25 kg, depending on the operator). Some provide water, WiFi, charging points, and reclining seats. 

The thing about a shared minivan is that you’re not the only one getting picked up or dropped off. Your ride could take a bit longer if there are 10 people and they all have different departure and arrival points.

There are several departures times throughout the morning and early afternoon.  

If you’re traveling in a big group and want your own ride, hire a private minivan. Prices start at $180 for the whole van. 

You’ll get all the same perks as above, but it gives you exclusive use of the van. You decide on the departure time and any stops along the way. Want to snag a picture of those lush mountains? No problem. Need a bathroom break? No problem. Just want to take a break to stretch your legs? A private minivan has you covered.

As you’d expect, hiring a private car is more expensive, but it offers convenience, privacy, and comfort. 

The cars are all air-conditioned SUVs; no Costa Rican terrain is too tough to handle. Although it’s unlikely you’ll be on any rough roads on this trip. It’s a well-paved route. 

Just like with the minivan, you’ll have door-to-door service from the airport or hotel in San Jose to your hotel in La Fortuna. 

Private cars can accommodate up to three or four people, making them ideal for families or small groups. They have a flat fee, so you can split the cost between your group. 

When is the best time to visit La Fortuna?

Head to La Fortuna in the dry season from December through April. You’ll have bright, sunny days with average temperatures around 80°F (26°C). This is also the high season — expect crowds.

However, if you don’t mind a little rain, the green season from May to November offers fewer crowds and lush, vibrant landscapes with afternoon showers. The landscape is breathtaking during this time of year, green as far as your eyes can see. 

How many days should you spend in La Fortuna?

With so much to do there, it’s easy to get “stuck” in La Fortuna. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, you’ll never want to leave. But if you spend three to four days there, you’ll get a lot in. 

You could stay longer for more outdoor adventures, but Costa Rica is full of cool experiences. If you have to move on, you won’t be disappointed. 

Where should you go after La Fortuna?

Next, head southwest to the cloud forests of Monteverde to experience its spectacular array of flora and fauna. It’ll only take about three hours to get there.

If you’re ready to surf, your next stop should be Tamarindo. It’s about 2.5 hours away and the surf capital of Costa Rica.
