Buses are the primary way to bridge the gap between Oaxca and San Cristobal de las Casas. Here's what you need to know about your options. 

By bus

The average bus time is 11 to 12 hours. Though these cities are in neighboring provinces, there's a big distance between them. Save a day (or night) to ensure you have enough time for this journey.

The cheapest bus from Oaxaca costs $72 per person. However, depending on which class you book, it can cost up to $84.

Here's a rundown of the different bus classes and their amenities:

First Class Bus — First Class Buses take 11.5 hours to reach San Cristobal de las Casas. They cost $72 per person and come with A/C, onboard WCs, reclining individual seats, and one large 21 kg (46 lb) piece of luggage per person. 

Executive Bus — Executive Buses take 11.5 hours to arrive. These come with A/C, individual reclining seats, charger sockets, onboard WCs, Wi-Fi (subject to availability), and a large piece of 21 kg (46 lb) luggage per person. These are most expensive, at $84 per person.

So, a First Class Bus is the more affordable option if you want to save money. But if you want extra comforts, an Executive Bus could be for you.

Pro tip: Bring your own snacks and water for the ride. It's a long journey, and there are no guarantees of food stops along the way.

When you leave Oaxaca, you'll likely depart from the Central de Autobuses de Oaxaca and arrive at Autobuses OCC (Terminal San Cristobal de las Casas). Both stations are centrally located.

About the journey from Oaxaca to San Cristobal de las Casas

The ride from Oaxaca to San Cristobal de las Casas is long, with an average journey time of 11.5 hours. Most buses depart late at night and arrive early in the morning. Take advantage of these night buses to save money on a night in a hostel. 

The journey covers 602 km (374 miles) through Oaxaca province and eastwards into Chiapas. Since most journeys take place at night, the views are limited. Also, most buses travel along the main highway, which has few sights. Don't feel guilty for closing your eyes on this route.

Oaxaca to San Cristobel de las Casas is a safe route for all travelers. As with any public bus, keep your valuables safe and hidden. A money belt is a great place to store your passport, cards, and travel documents.

Most buses have reclining seats. Consider investing in a travel neck pillow if you want extra comfort for a better overnight journey. Inflatable ones are great if you want something that packs down small.

The best time to travel from Oaxaca to San Cristobal de las Casas

November to April are the best months to travel from Oaxaca to San Cristobal de las Casas. These months have the driest and sunniest weather, so you're guaranteed great sightseeing weather. 

San Cristobal de las Casas has a cooler climate than other parts of Mexico. In the peak season, temperatures can be as low as 23°C/73°F and as high as 29°C/84°F. This is because San Cristobal is at a higher elevation and has a subtropical climate.

From May to October, the weather sits around 25°C/77°F, which is pleasant. What's not so nice is the high rainfall. The peak of the rain falls in June, August, and September. Expect an average of 700 mm per month. Umbrella, please!

Is San Cristobal de las Casas safe at night?

Yes. San Cristobal de las Casas is safe at night, but you should stay in the tourist areas (e.g., the city center). 

Just like anywhere in the world, as a tourist, you're more likely to stick out and be a victim of petty theft. Keep any valuables in your accommodation and be vigilant about your belongings while out.
