About the journey from Chefchaouen to Rabat

Nestled in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, Chefchaouen is a rising star on the tourist circuit.

Bathed in various shades of blue, its streets and alleys are a visual delight. Once you’ve snapped hundreds of selfies and posted them on social media, it is time to move on to the political and cultural heavyweight city of Rabat.

While not as hectic as its famous neighbor Casablanca, Rabat is a former imperial city that ticks off all the boxes for a Moroccan vacation. Add in its location on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, and Rabat offers visitors a little bit of everything.

Getting between the two takes a bit of effort, but it’s an effort that is well worth your while.

Things you must see in Rabat

Though Rabat has a little something for everyone, here are some of the top experiences you won’t want to miss:

  • Immerse yourself in history, culture, and architecture: Visiting the Mausoleum of Mohammed V is a cultural and historical highlight. As a bonus, you can also take in the striking Hassan Tower, surrounded by gardens. If there’s one historic site you visit, make it this one.

  • Get lost in the medina: Sharpen your haggling skills in this historic district full of cultural and architectural attractions. Try your hand at bargaining for local crafts, and when you tire of that, be sure to treat yourself to some of the best street food in the city.

  • Explore the kasbah: Oudaia Kasbah is an exotic maze of small alleyways, elaborate gateways, and classic buildings set behind ancient fortress walls. You can also take in some great views of the ocean and the nearby town of Salé. Leave yourself a few hours to wander through it properly.

  • Go green at Les Jardins Exotiques de Bouknadel: For a more tranquil Rabat experience, check out the natural beauty at Jardins Exotiques. As the name suggests, these gardens showcase a variety of exotic plants connected by a network of trails and walkways. This place is popular with the locals, so if possible, avoid visiting on the weekend.

What can you expect when traveling from Chefchaouen to Rabat?

The distance between Chefchaouen and Rabat is about 197 kilometers (123 miles) if you could travel in a straight line. Given the mountains that stand in your way, a straight line is not an option.

So, depending on your chosen means of transportation, your journey will last between three and eight hours.

Your trip will wind you through scenic valleys and gorges, carry you over mountains, and pass through small towns. Eventually, you’ll emerge into the flatter, dryer land of the coastal plain, where, at the end of the road, Rabat lies waiting on the shores of the Atlantic.

Pro tip: You have to drive for several hours through the beautiful but motion-sickness-inducing mountain roads. To avoid this, take a tablet before you start the drive.

Now, you can breathe in the ocean breezes and enjoy the buzz of a bigger, livelier town than sleepy Chefchaouen.

How to get from Chefchaouen to Rabat

You have three primary options for covering the route between Chefchaouen and Rabat:

  1. Hiring a minivan

  2. Hiring a private car

  3. Taking the bus.

The first two are more expensive but far more convenient. Not to mention quicker.

The latter is cheaper, but depending on the one you choose, it can make the trip a whole lot longer. Here are those options in greater detail:

By minivan

With the option of being picked up directly from your Chefchaouen hotel, minivans generally have the shortest drive time (about 3-4 hours).

They are usually equipped with A/C and English-speaking drivers.

Prices tend to be higher than other options, but the shorter drive time and convenience of pick-up and drop-off may very well be worth the extra cash.

If you are in a larger group, you can choose a private minivan. Otherwise, you can book a seat in a shared minivan.

By private car

Slightly more expensive with a little less room, a private car is a similar option to that of a minivan.

Once again, you’re looking at a drive time of about 3-4 hours in an air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver.

You can also choose when and where you want to be picked up and dropped off at both ends of the journey.

By bus

Morocco is blessed with an extensive network of buses that run the length and breadth of the country.

For the trip between Chefchaouen and Rabat, you could either choose a comfort, express or standard bus.

Go for the express bus, the cost is about the same, but it only takes about 4.5 hours. Standard and comfort buses stop along the way and could take up to 8.5 hours.

The downside of taking a bus versus a private ride is that you are tied to their timetable, and there aren’t too many daily departures. In fact, each bus usually has one departure per day.

Where do I catch the transportation from Chefchaouen?

If you choose the car or minivan option, you should be able to arrange a pick-up at your hotel in Chefchaouen.

Buses leave from the Chefchaouen CTM Bus Station, on the west side of town.

Where does the transportation from Chefchaouen arrive in Rabat?

If you opt to travel by car or minivan, you can be dropped off directly at your hotel or the place of your choosing in Rabat.

Buses will arrive at the Rabat CTM Bus Station towards the southwestern part of town. Unless you really feel like walking, you’ll need another bus or taxi to get to the kasbah or other highlights.

When is the best time of year to visit Rabat?

For the best touring weather, visit Rabat between April and October.

Yes, the summer months can get hot. But with average temperatures hovering at 28-29°C (83-85°F), you should be relatively comfortable, and there’s only the tiniest chance of rain.

On the downside, it is peak tourist season, so you won’t be the only one enjoying the weather.

If you come during the late fall and winter, you won’t want to hit the beach, but you can still tour the city comfortably. Average temperatures range from 18-20°C (63-68°F), which will make your stroll through the medina a pleasant one.

November and January offer the greatest chance of rain. Even then, anything more than a handful of rainy days per month is a rarity.

How much time do I need in Rabat?

Morocco has so many attractions demanding your attention that budgeting precious itinerary time is a challenge.

If you plan on visiting the kasbah, medina, and Jardins Exotiques, give yourself at least one very full day. But if you really want to soak in the exotic flavor, count on two days in Rabat before moving on to Casablanca or beyond.

In fact, you could even use Rabat as a base of operations for visiting Casablanca or other attractions if you only want to unpack once.
