If you're seeking greater flexibility and would prefer to get to Trat on your own time, consider booking simply the ferry service. The ferry comes equipped with air conditioning on the lower deck, and there are bathrooms on board. Free hotel pick up is available only in Trat.
With no airport nearby, the only way to travel from Koh Kood to Trat on the mainland is by boat. Modern, high-speed ferries and speedboats leave from Ao Salat in the north of Koh Kood island several times a day. The ride takes between 40 and 90 minutes, depending on the boat.
Whether you’re returning after an island-hopping trip around the Koh Chang Islands, or you're visiting for the first time, Trat is a great place to spend a day or two. A former French colony, today, Trat is a multicultural town with a laid-back vibe, and many affordable places to stay. The wider province is very scenic, with white sand beaches, mangrove forests, coral reefs and Hat Chao Mai National Park on the doorstep.
You can’t fly from Koh Kood to Trat; traveling by boat is the only option. High-speed ferries, regular ferries and speedboats leave from the pretty fishing village of Ao Salat in the north of the island and arrive at Laem Sok Pier on the mainland, south of Trat town. If you're moving on from Trat, you can fly to other destinations in Thailand from the small airport which is about 30 minutes from the town. Taking a high-speed ferry
High-speed ferries on this route have seating in air-conditioned cabins as well as outdoor decks if you prefer being in the fresh air during the ride. Drinks and snacks can be bought on board and there is free Wi-Fi. You can buy a combination ticket which includes hotel pick-up and drop-off.
Taking a speedboat
The speedboat service on this route is faster than the ferry but is more expensive. You’re not able to sit outside, and there isn’t anywhere to buy food and drink on board. Hotel pick up and drop off are not included.
All boats leave from the main pier which is in the north of the island in the picturesque fishing village of Ao Salat, and arrive at Laem Sok Pier where there are a few places to eat and grab a coffee. It takes about 20 minutes to reach Trat town from the pier.
Be aware that if seas are rough, boats might be cancelled, in which case you’ll be able to obtain a refund or a ticket for the next available boat.
