About the ride from Koh Samet to Bangkok

The ride from Koh Samet to Bangkok can be achieved by taking a high speed ferry from Na Dan Pier, on the island, to Nuan Thip Pier in Ban Phe, and then a private minivan or VIP bus service to the Thai capital. The seven kilometer boat leg of the trip takes approximately 90 minutes and the ride by road is around three hours. The total distance is approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles), which gives you more than enough time to catch up on some rest or swap stories and photos with fellow travelers.

Combining a ferry and bus ticket is the most efficient, and affordable, way to travel. Private transfers by minivan won't include the ferry service, so this will have to be booked separately. You can choose where you get dropped off, however, so you pay your money and you take your choice. Whichever method you opt for, booking in advance is essential for peace of mind and to avoid a lengthy wait for transport. Most ferries, minivans and VIP buses will be air conditioned and sell a small selection of food and drinks. However, it's still a good idea to stock up on supplies in Koh Samet before you hit the road to Bangkok although there are bound to be opportunities along the way to grab something if you're desperately seeking sustenance.

Once you arrive in Bangkok you'll be dropped either at your selected bus terminal or at the front door of your accommodation if you're traveling by private minivan and if you've booked a hotel or hostel, in advance. You might well have already visited Thailand's captivating capital as part of your travels however there's always an exciting new hang out or palatial property to keep an eye out for on a return visit. Why not check out the modern art exhibitions at the Bangkok Art & Cultural Center or take in a Muay Thai performance at the Rajadamnern Stadium? You never know what's around the next corner so get ready to jump in a tuk tuk and see where the mood takes you! Just make sure to agree on a fare, and location, first before blindly being delivered to a succession of clothing outlets – you have been warned!

What to see when traveling from Koh Samet to Bangkok

There are usually just a couple of buses and ferries leaving Koh Samet for Bangkok each day. They tend to depart around midday and will arrive in the capital during the afternoon or early evening. Private minivans can be booked to go from Nuan Thip Pier in Ban Phe at any time and will arrive in Bangkok slightly earlier than the VIP buses.

Waving farewell to the beautiful exotic island images surrounding Koh Samet can be slightly emotional so make sure you soak up all that sand, sea and sunshine onboard the ferry as you depart. However, don't get too disheartened because your next stop is Bangkok where a 24/7 'live life for adventure' attitude is simply the only way to see this sensational city that never sleeps. Even on the approach to the capital you'll see the surrounding suburbs and get to understand more about everyday life for Thai people living on the outskirts of the big city.

The best advice is to book accommodation in advance and know how you're going to travel once you've gotten off the bus. If you're traveling by minivan you can ride right up to your hotel or hostel's front door. It's up to you how you choose to get around and also up to you how close to the wind you like to sail when it comes to knowing where you want to go next. Have fun, stay safe and experience as much of this ancient Southeast Asian capital as possible.

How to get from Koh Samet to Bangkok

Taking a bus and ferry

Taking a bus and ferry from Koh Samet to Bangkok is the easiest, and least expensive, way to travel. Tickets cover the sea crossing and the follow-on road trip, and drop you off on the Khao San Road (That Siriam office) or at Thanon Tani (the Boonsiri Ferry office). Ferries and buses are air conditioned and also feature small onboard bathrooms and a selection of snacks and drinks. Alternatively, you can book a separate ferry ticket and then a private minivan to take you from Ban Phe, on the mainland, to Bangkok. This will get you to the capital in comfort and style and you can also arrange where you'd like to be dropped off rather than having to disembark at a designated point.

Whichever way you choose to travel, you'll need to set aside a whole afternoon to safely negotiate the 200 kilometer (125 mile) distance from Koh Samet to Bangkok. Booking in advance alleviates the stress of 'winging it' and gives you a chance to plan your next journey without the possibility of a lengthy delay if a bus or ferry is already fully booked. This is certainly the case in high season , which runs from June to August.

Taking a minivan

Taking a private minivan from Nuan Thip Pier in Ban Phe to Bangkok costs a little bit more than a bus, and doesn't include the ferry from Koh Samet, but it really is the most comfortable way to travel. You also have the luxury of being dropped off at any hotel or hostel in Bangkok. This is providing you know where you're going to go next. Extra space and an open departure time also stand in the favor of a minivan, and if you've got plans to head directly to the airport, these safe and speedy transport options can be a real lifesaver if you've got a plane to catch.
