  • We took the shuttle to Chiang Khong, best splurge we did. Nearly half of the journey there is currently road construction and travel is much much slower. Thankful for the comfy seats and AC. Pick up from McDonald's at the Phae Gate was easy. Spent about 30 min picking up other customers from hotels. Quick morning toilet and snack stop just outside city limits. 40 minute lunch break at a touristy restaurant with overpriced food. Stopped at White Temple for 20 minutes about an hour after lunch. Stopped at Tesco in Chiang Rai and let off most passengers; some seemed surprised at not being brought to their hotels, but we had two more hours of driving to Chiang Khong, with one more toilet break. End point is Nomads Hostel, which is about 1,000 m from most of main area of Chiang Khong. So you'll either want to get a taxi or stay at Nomads (who I think owns bus company). Time wise, plan for entire day of traveling and to overnight before crossing into Laos. Departed at 9am, arrived into Chiang Khong at 4:45pm.
