About the ride from Siem Reap to Vientiane

What to expect in Siem Reap and Vientiane

After exploring the magical temples of Angkor Wat and experiencing the nightlife on Pub Street in Siem Reap, chilling out in Vientiane could be the perfect introduction to your time in Laos. As a capital city, Vientiane has a reputation for being a bit boring, but it actually has so much to offer! It is still a hidden gem (as is most of Laos), so you won’t have swarms of tourists ruining all of your photos at the countless stunning Wats around the city.

Vientiane also has a ton of stunning French-inspired architecture, plenty of delicious food and loads of history, making this a great place to spend a few days.

One of the best things to do in Vientiane is to check out COPE Vientiane, an exhibition designed to educate the public about the impacts of the bombs dropped on Laos during the Vietnam War. It is also a rehab clinic, free museum, and NGO that focuses on supporting bomb victims, providing locals free access to prostheses, wheelchairs and physical therapy to improve the quality of life for bomb-affected citizens.

Buddha Park is another great place to visit. It's a little odd, with statues of humans, animals, and over 200 buddhas dotted around the park, but it is definitely a unique way to spend an afternoon.

Visiting Vientiane’s many temples, or Wats, is another great way to experience the culture of the capital. Some of the most impressive are Pha That Luang, which can be found on all of the currency notes, and Wat Si Saket, which has almost 7,000 silver, stone, bronze, and ceramic buddhas nestled into the walls.

As the city sits right on the Mekong river, there are plenty of places to enjoy a great meal and watch the sun go down. There is plenty to do for a few days and Vientiane is a great way to start your adventure in Laos.

About the ride from Siem Reap to Vientiane

Getting from Siem Reap to Vientiane can take a while, so make sure to pack your patience and load up your device with plenty of music or a great podcast to binge for your journey. You’ll also want to try to grab a coveted window seat for the minivan portion of the drive if you select that option.

Make sure you remember that you will have to cross the border between Cambodia and Laos in order to make it to your final destination for this journey. Double check the visa requirements for Laos and have everything ready to go before getting on the bus. You will want to be prepared so that you aren’t turned away at the border.

How to get from Siem Reap to Vientiane

Even though Siem Reap is firmly on the backpacker route in SouthEast Asia, Vientiane is still off the beaten path so there aren’t a lot of options when travelling between the two cities yet. The best options are to fly or to take the minivan + sleeping bus combination, depending on your budget. It would be possible to take several different buses, and a train through Thailand, and cross the border into Laos via car or taxi but this would require two border crossings and is much more complicated. As it hardly saves any time, this route isn’t recommended. Between the minivan + sleeping bus and the flight, your best bet is to choose the option that fits best with your travel plans and budget.

Minivan + sleeping bus

One way to get from Siem Reap to Vientiane is to travel via a minivan + sleeping bus combination. The minivans usually have enough space for up to 12 people and are quite comfortable, with A/C and reclining seats. The minivan will stop in Don Det on the Cambodian side in order to complete the border crossing into Laos.

Just across the border in Pakse, Laos is usually when you will switch over to the sleeping bus. The bus will have fully reclining seats, which looks more like a single bed. They may not be the most comfortable if you are on the taller side or you are used to the comfort of your personal space. You may have to share your “bed” with a stranger, so it's best to be mentally prepared if you’re traveling by yourself. They do usually have charging ports, A/C, and some even have WiFI on board. The journey is a long one at over 22 hours. However, it is much cheaper than flying and it's a great way to see more of Southeast Asia.

Crossing the border from Siem Reap to Vientiane

It is important to remember that you will most likely need a visa when entering Laos. You should always check the most up to date visa requirements on the Lao government website before traveling. It is possible to apply for your visa on arrival in Laos at the border crossing, as long as you have your passport, valid for at least six months, and two passport photos with you.

The fee is between $30-45USD, depending on your country of origin. You would apply for a single entry, 30 day tourist visa. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days or would rather feel more prepared, you can apply for your visa ahead of time via a travel agency or through a Lao embassy or consulate. Then, when going through border control you would simply show your visa and have your passport stamped.

Flying

The easiest and quickest option would be to fly from Siem Reap to Vientiane, but there typically aren’t any direct flights. This means you would have to stop over in Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur, depending on the airline you choose. Because of the stopovers, flights generally take 13 and a half hours and can cost between $100-150. Border crossings are a bit more straightforward at the airport, though, and you may prefer the comfort of an airplane over a minivan.
