Koh Lanta to Koh Samui

If you didn’t get your fill of beautiful white beaches and stunning sunsets on Koh Lanta, head to one of Thailand’s most famous islands, Koh Samui, for a little more paradise.

But you’re probably wondering, How do I get from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui? That’s why you're here, right?

We’ll get to that in a minute.

But first, here are a few things to keep you busy in Koh Samui.

The island has something for every style of traveler. So whether you are a budget backpacker or can splurge like a Hollywood celebrity, this island has plenty to keep you busy.

Chaweng Beach is a great place to start your Koh Samui adventure – the hub of the island. It is the biggest town and where all of the nightlife is located. Chaweng beach is quite possibly the most gorgeous beach on the island, although that’s an impossibly difficult call to make.

If you prefer something a bit more laid back and quiet, head to Lamai Beach instead. It’s just as beautiful as Chaweng, but there are fewer tourists around, so it’ll feel more secluded. The water is also deeper here, making it the perfect spot to go for a swim.

Most of the beaches on Koh Samui are dotted with beach bars and restaurants, so you really can’t go wrong wherever you choose to relax.

If you need a bit more adventure – fear not! Koh Samui is jam-packed with adrenaline junkie activities. There is an exciting zip line at Sky Fox Cable Ride, awesome jungle treks at the Namuang Waterfalls, and some of the best scuba diving in the entire world!

About the ride from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui

The distance from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui is about 350 km (~215 miles). To get from one island to the other, you’ll have to cut diagonally across Thailand and take a series of ferries.

This can be a rather arduous journey, but both islands are gorgeous in their own right, and it is absolutely worth it.

Unfortunately, Koh Lanta does not have an airport, so prepare yourself for a long day of traveling.

Luckily tourists cover the Koh Lanta to Koh Samui distance regularly, so the path is well worn and easy to follow.

How to get from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui

Options for transport from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui are limited because Koh Lanta doesn’t have an airport. That would make it too easy.

The best way to get from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui is the bus + ferry combo because it is the cheapest and most streamlined way to travel. In addition, you are guaranteed to make your connections, so it doesn’t require the brain drain of planning.

However, you may be able to organize a great travel package that includes a flight. If you can maximize your time on Koh Samui, it may be worth the extra work. Who doesn’t want extra time in paradise?

Bus + Ferry

The bus + ferry combination is a great way to get from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui. The transfer schedule of the bus and two ferries are aligned to ensure you don’t miss any connections, and it’s by far the cheapest option.

You’ll first take a ferry to get off of Koh Lanta. Then, you’ll transfer over to your bus or minivan, depending on the option you select. After traveling across the mainland, you’ll hop on your final ferry to get to Koh Samui.

When it comes to this combo, you can take the standard ferry or the high-speed option.

Phantip Travel offers a standard bus + ferry combination. It’s a direct service that takes eight and a half hours to get from island to island.

Tickets with Phantip start at US$32 per person and include very basic amenities. Buses and ferries both have AC, but only the boat has restrooms. The bus will make stops so you can use the bathroom and get out to stretch your legs.

You can bring up to 20kgs of luggage.

You can cancel your ticket up to seven days prior to leaving or change your ticket up to 72 hours before your departure.

Lomprayah has a standard bus + ferry option for US$31 per person. Their amenities are similar to other companies, but they allow changes and cancelations up to 72 hours before departure.

Pro tip – Lomprayah tickets from Koh Lanta to Koh Samui tend to sell out, so book early if you choose to go with this option.

Seatran Ferry also offers a standard bus + ferry combo, starting at US$30 per person. They provide the same amenities as their competitors, but you cannot change or cancel your ticket once it has been booked.

This company also offers a high-speed bus+ferry combo for US$32 per person. Instead of traveling in a coach bus, you will ride in a minivan that only seats 10 passengers. The journey will still take eight and a half hours, but you won’t have to travel with as many people.

Don’t let the name fool you – it actually takes the same amount of time no matter which bus you take. The major difference is taking a minivan with the high-speed option and a coach bus with the standard bus ticket.

You can change or cancel your ticket up to 24 hours before departure, and you can add hotel drop off in Koh Samui for an additional US$5 charge. Seatran will even pick you up in Koh Lanta for free, which is a great service that other options don’t provide.

Flight

If you are prone to seasickness or can’t stomach the idea of an eight-and-a-half-hour trip, you could also take the ferry from Koh Lanta to Krabi or Phuket and fly from there.

While this option won’t save you a ton of time, it will spare you an extra boat ride. The ferry to Ao Nang in Krabi takes about two hours. From there you will need to take a taxi or a bus to the airport. There are direct flights from Krabi to Koh Samui each day, and they take about an hour.

All of this will cost around US$200, but you may be able to get a great deal on your flight if you set fare alerts with Bangkok Airlines.

To fly from Phuket, you can take the hour and 15-minute ferry to Rassada pier and then a taxi or shuttle to the airport. Flights from Phuket to Koh Samui take an hour and operate several days a week, so double-check that they line up with your travel plans before booking.

This flight option will also cost around US$200, but depending on the day of the week, it may be quicker than flying from Krabi.

Now you know your travel options. Whichever way gets you to the beach, sipping cocktails and watching the sunset the quickest is the best way to get to Koh Samui.
