Phuket to Koh Ngai

Koh Ngai is the epitome of chilled-out Thai island vibes. This is where you go to relax, sip cocktails on the beach, capture a few gorgeous sunrises (or sunsets) and enjoy some fun in the sun.

Other than working on your tan, trekking through the jungle to Paradise Beach and hiking to Koh Ngai View Point should definitely be on your list of must-do’s while on the island.

Since you need some relaxation after all your arduous travels, you may be wondering, How do I get from Phuket to Koh Ngai?

Check out your options below to plan your trip!

About the ride from Phuket to Koh Ngai

The distance from Phuket to Koh Ngai is 105 km (~65 miles). You’ll travel across the Andaman Sea and be spoiled with gorgeous views along the way.

Because you must take a boat to reach the island, be sure to pack some medicine if you’re prone to seasickness. Unfortunately, there is no way to avoid traveling by sea.

How to get from Phuket to Koh Ngai

When considering how to get from Phuket to Koh Ngai, the main things to keep in mind are convenience and cost.

There are two main ways to complete this journey: high-speed ferry or bus + ferry.

Each form of transport from Phuket to Koh Ngai has its benefits and drawbacks. The high-speed ferry is definitely the more popular option, but it can sell out quickly and is often crowded. On the other hand, the bus + ferry combo is a bit more private and luxurious but more costly.

High-Speed Ferry

The high-speed ferry is probably the best way to get from Phuket to Koh Ngai. You can complete this trip in about 2.5-3 hours, depending on which boat you get, and all ferries offer similar amenities.

No matter which company you choose to book with, your boat will have a lower deck with a bathroom and AC, ensuring that your ride is as comfortable as possible.

If a ferry is canceled due to inclement weather, all companies offering service from Phuket to Koh Ngai will allow you to rebook for the following day or receive a full refund.

It is important to note that ferries only run from October to April. So if you plan to travel to Koh Ngai at any other time, it will be off-season, and you’ll have to find alternative transportation. Also, most of the hotels, bars, and restaurants will be closed, so you’re better off traveling during peak season, even if it’s more expensive.

There are three companies to choose from to book a high-speed ferry from Phuket to Koh Ngai: Tigerline, Satun Pakbara, or Bundhaya. All three will depart Rassada Pier in Phuket, which is about 35 minutes from Phuket International Airport.

Tigerline is a highly regarded company in Thailand. Their option to get from Phuket to Koh Ngai costs $63 per person and will drop passengers off at the Koh Ngai Resort on the island’s southeastern corner.

Tigerline allows two pieces of luggage, and you can change or cancel your ticket up to 48 hours before departure. This is a great feature for people whose travel plans are constantly changing, or if you happen to fall in love with Phuket and decide you have to stay for a few extra days.

Satun Pakbara Speed Boats is another ferry option you can take from Phuket to Koh Ngai. They have similar amenities to Tigerline but have a flexible luggage policy. So, you can essentially bring as much stuff as you like.

Satun Pakbara has one departure per day, which leaves Phuket at 8:30 am. The boat will drop passengers at Sea Open Diving Koh Hai, located in the middle of the eastern coast. Compare this to where your accommodation is to see if this is the most convenient option.

Satun Pakbara offers complimentary hotel pickup in Kata, Karon, Phuket Town, or Patong Beach, which saves transportation costs to the pier.

And they have a free seven-day cancelation policy. Five days before, you are subject to a 15% cancelation fee and three days before your trip, you must pay a 50% fee. While this isn’t quite as generous as Tigerline’s policy, it is still great for ferry tickets in Asia. Unfortunately, many companies don’t offer a refund or allow you to make changes once you’ve booked.

Tickets with Satun Pakbara Speed Boat will cost $65 per person, which is a great deal considering you get transport to the pier included.

Bundhaya Speed Boats is your final ferry option to get from Phuket to Koh Ngai. This is the cheapest option, with tickets starting at $52 per person, but it also takes the longest. Trips with Bundhaya take just over three hours, while the other companies will get you to Koh Ngai in about 2-hours 45-minutes.

This company also offers an 8:30 am departure and will drop you off at Koh Ngai Resort.

Once you book a ticket with Bundhaya, you cannot cancel or change it, so be sure you’ve found the right ferry option.

Bus + Ferry

Another way to get from Phuket to Koh Ngai is by bus + ferry combination. This is a great option if you are coming directly from the airport or traveling with a group of friends to split the cost and share the ride.

King Travel offers a reliable transport service from Phuket to Koh Ngai.

A car or minivan will pick you up from Phuket International Airport and drive you to meet your boat. This boat will be a longtail, the traditional boat used by many Thai fishermen. These are a lot of fun and a great way to enjoy the beauty of the Andaman Sea, but they are not fast by any means.

This option will take about five and a half hours, so keep that in mind when booking. However, once you arrive at Koh Ngai, you will have free hotel drop-off anywhere on the island.

If you choose the bus + ferry combo, which can transport up to nine people, the trip will cost $200. A car, which can transport three people, will be $187. This is the total for the entire trip, though, and can be split amongst everyone in the vehicle.

In the end, the best way to travel from Phuket to Koh Ngai is what works for your budget and travel schedule. But, regardless of how you choose to get to Koh Ngai, relaxing island vibes await you!
