Arequipa to Ica

Ica is a fascinating town and should be on every traveler's list when visiting Peru.

It is one of the best places to truly observe and experience Peruvian culture. It’s also a great place to base yourself as you explore several fascinating sites located around the area. One of the most well-known is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Nazca Lines. These mysterious geometric patterns are unexplained, and it’s a great place to explore.

Ica is also very close to Paracus Natural Reserve – a stunning location where turquoise water meets the vibrant orange desert. You can explore the reserve on foot or bicycle – it’s a beautiful place to wander around.

Another exciting place to check out is the recently discovered “Canyon of the Lost.” Tour agencies in Ica can help arrange transportation to these geological formations.

About the ride from Arequipa to Ica

Ica is located northwest of Arequipa and is situated on the Pacific coast. Getting to Ica takes quite a bit of time and commitment because the distance from Arequipa to Ica is just over 700 km (about 435 miles). It’s a long journey, but it’s worth it. Driving through Peru can definitely be beautiful, but you will most likely be making this journey at night. Because of this, grab a seat on the bus that is most comfortable and will help you get some sleep.

How to get from Arequipa to Ica

There are a few options for transport from Arequipa to Ica. The easiest way is by bus – it requires the least amount of thought and effort. There is a luxury bus option and a local bus option. Both will get you to Ica in about twelve and a half hours.

Another way to get to Ica would be to fly from Arequipa to Lima or Ayacucho and then bus the rest of the way to Ica. Unfortunately, Ica does not have an airport, so you will have to take a bus for at least some portion of the trip.

Bus

Double Decker Luxury Bus

The best way to get from Arequipa to Ica is by bus.

It is the most economical and convenient way to travel the 700 km distance between cities, especially because Ica does not have an airport. It takes approximately 11 hours and 30 minutes to get from Arequipa to Ica, so traveling in comfort is a must.

Cruz del Sur operates a luxury double-decker bus that provides many amenities that will help keep you comfortable. Each seat reclines 160° and has a charger and personal TV. There is a bathroom on the bus, and you are provided with blankets, snacks, and several rest stops along the way. Seats are relatively comfortable, and many buses even have WiFi on board.

This Arequipa to Ica bus costs between $40-$50 per person and includes all those great amenities which make it a comfortable trip. An added bonus is the fact that the bus runs overnight, so you also save on accommodation.

Local Bus

There are local bus options that you can take as well.

These can cost a bit less but may require transfers and long layovers.

One route is a bus via Nazca. This option is also overnight, like the double-decker bus and takes about 12 hours. So, you would be on the bus for 9 hours from Arequipa to Nazca and then have an additional two hours once you start the second leg of the trip.

Oltursa operates a direct bus between Arequipa and Ica for $25. While this option is much cheaper, there are far fewer amenities on board, and seats are not nearly as comfortable.

Civa also operates a bus from Arequipa to Ica. These buses have air conditioning and seats that recline 140°. While this option may lack some of the other fancier amenities that the double-decker luxury bus has, the Civa route is only around $16 per person.

Bus + Flight

If a 12 to 13-hour bus ride isn’t your ideal way to travel, you could opt to fly from Arequipa to a bigger city like Lima or Ayacucho and bus the remainder of the way.

The easiest and longest combination of bus + flight is from Arequipa to Ayacucho and then on to Ica. However, this option won’t save you any time, as it takes about 13 hours in total, including the 7-hour bus ride from Ayacucho to Ica.

A few airlines operate the flight from Arequipa each day, but there are no non-stop flights. So, while you won’t save on time or efficiency, this could be an option if you prefer not to be cooped up on a bus for over twelve hours at a time.

This route may be preferable to going through Lima, though, because you can take a bus directly from Ayacucho into Ica. Unfortunately, there is no direct bus from Lima to Ica, so you have quite a few transfers before arriving in Ica (see below).

The faster yet more complicated way to arrive in Ica is to take a flight directly from Arequipa to Lima and then bus the rest of the way there. Arriving in Ica from Lima Airport is a little tricky, but it may be worth it to cut your time on a bus in half.

Several airlines operate daily direct flights between Arequipa and Lima. The flight takes about an hour and thirty minutes and depending on when you book, you can find great deals on tickets.

Once arriving in Lima, you will need to take a bus to Lima Iba Reducto Miraflores. These depart every 30 minutes. From there, transfer over to the 28 de Julio bus. After a short journey, you will get off at the Thomas Valle stop. Then, you’ll have to get off the bus and transfer one more time to Lima Plaza Norte. This is where you can catch the bus to Ica.

Regardless of how you choose to arrive, you’ll be so glad you have the chance to experience authentic Peruvian culture once you get to Ica.
