This is one South American road trip that you're never going to forget. So sit back, relax and watch the blue hues of the Pacific pass by your window. It's a long ride, including a border crossing, but if you're hoping to find out how to get from Guayaquil to Lima, look no further. 

We've got all the details to help you cross the border and travel as safely and efficiently as possible. Although it can be quite a scary thought, there’s nothing to fear other than fear itself – and thunderous snoring from your bus-mate.

It's a huge distance overland; we’re looking at 1150 kilometers (714 miles). You'll be traveling for over a day if you're not booking a flight. Of course, you can fly if you want to, but then you might miss out on meeting the man or woman of your dreams onboard a sleeper bus – hmm, throw the dice?

Taking the bus from Guayaquil to Lima is the best way to travel if you're not a fan of flying. There's only one service provider – Cruz del Sur – that we recommend. This company is well known throughout the region and has an excellent record of safety and timekeeping.

Buses are very comfortable and have reclining seats, so you can be assured of a good night's rest, unless that dreaded snorer is next to you! 

Wifi access is also available, as are personal TVs so you can switch on and tune out as you travel.

Air conditioning is always on full blast, so take a sweater or hoodie with you to keep warm! Complimentary blankets will also be provided, but they're rarely that cozy.

Food and drinks will be on offer throughout the bus journey. However, it's always a good idea to bring your own supplies, just to make sure you're fully prepared for everything as you travel from Guayaquil to Lima.

The 130 Reclining Seats bus that is run by Cruz del Sur has English-speaking staff onboard. This can be really handy if you want to know where you are throughout the journey and when the next pit stop will be. 

There are washrooms on the buses, but stops will be made to stretch your legs and grab a bite to eat. Definitely take the chance to walk around. 28 hours is a long time to be sitting in one position!

If you want to bypass a day of traveling by bus, there's also a Guayaquil to Lima flight. This only takes a couple of hours if you're flying non-stop with LATAM. Otherwise, it's a six-hour flight if you're having to make connections.

Planes are modern like any other plane around the world. If you want to arrive in Lima feeling fresh, a flight is the way to go. No one feels great after a 28 hour bus ride. It's also the best option for travelers who are short on time.

Flight tickets to Lima are expensive. Tickets start at US$400. 

Bus tickets are far more affordable. The price of a bus ticket usually starts from US$107 per person.

 

Crossing the border from Ecuador to Peru

Crossing the overland border from Ecuador to Peru is easy if you're traveling by bus because the visa is paid for upfront, and passports are shown when boarding the bus.

If you're flying a non-stop flight from Guayaquil to Lima, it’s the easiest way to cross the border because all visa and travel documents are dealt with at check-in. 

 

What to see when traveling from Guayaquil to Lima

Taking the bus allows you to see some absolutely stunning scenery as the route skirts Ecuador's southwest coastline as well as Peru's Pacific shores.

Following the Pan American highway south gives you every opportunity to experience the changing landscapes and cultural contrasts.

Stops for comfort breaks often combine with scenic viewing areas so you can get off the bus, stretch your legs and enjoy the views at the same time.

You'll also pass through lots of small seaside villages and towns as you complete the Guayaquil to Lima distance. Keep your eyes peeled for fresh fruit and veg stalls lined up along the side of rural and minor roads.

If you're on the flight, the most scenic sections will be take off in Ecuador and landing in Peru. Also, if there's no cloud cover, you might get to see the beautiful blue swells of the Pacific ocean. Fingers crossed for fab weather!

Taking a bus from Guayaquil to Lima 

If you're on a budget, the best transport option is a Guayaquil to Lima bus with reclining seats. 

These air-conditioned buses are a great way to meet other travelers and see lots of coastal scenery at the same time.

It's a long journey, but there will be plenty of stops along the way. You’ll also have a break at the border as you cross from Ecuador into Peru. 

Sleeper bus ticket prices start from US$107 per passenger, and there are usually two departures each day. You will also need to pay for the cost of the visa on top of this travel ticket.

 

Taking a flight from Guayaquil to Lima 

Flying is the easiest and most efficient way to travel from Ecuador to Peru. All your visa and travel documents are shown at check-in, so all you need to do is sit back and relax.

Non-stop flights usually take a couple of hours in the air and the usual hour or so at check-in. It's a quick ride with ticket prices starting from around US$400.

Basically, if you're looking to travel in the quickest time possible, without looking like you've just slept on a coach, fly.
