About the ride from Koh Chang to Koh Mak

Suppose you’ve always wanted to explore Thailand’s southeast coast. In that case, there are numerous islands just offshore that provide a really laid-back, untouched natural ambiance. This is what life’s all about, so grab your sunblock, swimmers and snorkel—we’re going in!

It's not a long way from Koh Chang to Koh Mak, the distance is only 19 kilometers (11 miles), but when you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve reached another world. It’s a tiny island where peaceful low-key resorts are the norm rather than high-rise hotels and all-night bars.

This is the type of place where you can spend whole days exploring around the coast by sea kayak or making the most of the offshore coral reefs with a mask and snorkel. Basically, if you’re looking to escape, go to Koh Mak.

Here’s how you do it…

There are a couple of ways to get from Koh Chang to Koh Mak. Both take you over water. Firstly, there’s a high-speed ferry run by Boonsiri High Speed Ferries. This is a relatively large vessel, although it’s for walk-on passengers only, no cars.

The high-speed ferry has ample room to walk around on the open-top deck or sit back and relax on the plastic seats in the air-conditioned lower deck. You’ll also find a TV and washroom onboard as well as a small kiosk to purchase drinks and snacks.

WiFi access is also available on the ferry, but it’s not always a great connection.

Ferries will be canceled in bad weather, but there will be a full refund if this happens.

Tickets start from US$16. The luggage allowance is 30kg, but how much do you need besides a couple of pairs of swimmers and a towel or two? Most travelers end up wearing just a sarong and a smile by the end of the vacation.

There’s only one high-speed ferry departure each day. Travelers are advised to book a hotel pick up service and wait in the lobby an hour before the designated departure time. It’s a seamless way to do things and saves you humping that 30kg suitcase down to the harbor. Phew!

The other mode of transport from Koh Chang to Koh Mak is a speedboat. These vessels are supplied by Koh Chang Bang Bao Boat. It’s actually a slower option when compared to the high-speed ferry. Speedboats take just under two hours, whereas high-speeds do it in an hour.

Speedboat ferries are also bereft of amenities other than a life jacket and a seat. You also only get enough luggage for just one carry-on bag per passenger. The price is comparable to the ferries at US$17 per person.

Probably the main benefit of a speedboat is that it’s fun. You get to feel every wave as you skim across the Gulf of Thailand. Sea spray will soak your arms, and you can even go out on the deck and catch some rays.

This is the best way to travel from Koh Chang to Koh Mak if you want to start your vacation with an adventure on the high seas. Perhaps not the most advisable option for landlubbers who need to take seasickness meds when heading to the boating lake.

What to see when traveling from Koh Chang to Koh Mak

Although the distance from Koh Chang to Koh Mak is minimal, you’ll still be traveling across the Gulf of Thailand for at least an hour. There’s plenty to see in this time, including lots of tiny islands in the distance as well as lots of Thai fishermen looking for the day’s catch.

Koh Mak itself is a relatively flat island. It features rubber and coconut trees as well as lots of slices of white sand around its coastline. So keep an eye out for your first sighting of land. It’s an exciting prospect knowing that this island will be your home for the next few days or weeks if you’re lucky.

How to get from Koh Chang to Koh Mak

Taking a speedboat from Koh Chang to Koh Mak

The best way to get from Koh Chang to Koh Mak if you’re looking for excitement is by speedboat ferry. Speedboats leave once a day from Koh Chang and offer a lumpy, bumpy 90-minute ride across the Gulf of Thailand.

It’s a safe trip with life preservers included. Just don’t expect too much more in the way of amenities. This is a basic boat that’s well maintained but not equipped with loads of bells and whistles. There’s no bathroom onboard, for starters. You’ll have to cross your legs.

Taking a ferry from Koh Chang to Koh Mak

The Koh Chang to Koh Mak ferry can get you over to the island in about an hour. It’s a high-speed car-free service run by a very reputable local company. It’s popular with holidaymakers, so you’ll need to book in advance to guarantee a seat on the sole daily departure.
