About the ride from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach

Discovering the island of Koh Phi Phi for the first time is a magical event. It’s been talked about, written about and everyone’s gotten the t-shirt. Now it's your turn. It's an excellent location for a week's vacation, and when it's time to leave, you'll find several ferries ready and waiting to whisk you back to reality.

Numerous ferry operators work out of Koh Phi Phi. All offer a fairly efficient service to guide you over the Andaman and to Railay Beach on the southwest Thai mainland.

The distance from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach is just 8kms (5 miles). You can easily make this in 30 minutes if traveling by speedboat ferry, or you can take your time by standard ferry, which usually takes about a couple of hours.

It's a well-used route for backpackers looking to explore more of Thailand. Most travelers will have been on Phi Phi for a few days, so you're sure to bump into a few characters with stories to tell or at least suntans to show off.

Ferry transport from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach ranges from relatively basic to modern and well maintained. Prices start from as little as US$14 for the standard ferry organized by Jumping Frog Travel to US$37 for the super-duper high-speed ferry run by Tigerline.

No matter which vessel you're taking you’re assured of a seat if you’ve purchased a ticket. There won’t be any standing-room-only sailings on this crossing!

The larger ferries will have an air-conditioned lower deck and an open upper deck. The smaller speedboats will only have an enclosed cabin, and you won't be able to venture outside. Toilets won't be onboard smaller vessels, so you'll have to cross your legs for half an hour or so.

Best advice is to book your ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach in advance. You'll be given a time slot so you won't have to wait around all day at TonSai Pier. Get down to the pier at least 30 minutes before departure just so you can get your luggage on board without a mad rush.

What to see when traveling from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach

There's plenty to see on this crossing, especially if you're taking a slower ferry. The tourist ferry run by Ao Nang Princess, for instance, takes 90 minutes to arrive. It gives you plenty of time to take in some sun on the top deck and stare out over the Andaman.

Get ready to spot some tiny islets and sheltered islands as you travel. You might also get lucky and see some dolphins or porpoises appearing above the waves. Generally, the most exciting parts of the journey are leaving and arriving at the piers.

Often Thai harbors are a hive of activity, with local porters and fishermen vying for space with the tourists and travel touts. It's fun to watch, especially when it's not your luggage being thrown from hand to hand to a hard concrete jetty.

Another thing to see as you take the Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach ferry is all that glorious sunshine. Just make sure to take precautions if you find yourself on an open-top deck for a couple of hours. Floppy hats, suntan lotion and dark sunglasses are essential — especially with a hangover!

How to get from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach

Taking a ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach

The best way to get from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach is by ferry. It's a fast journey and very affordable. Times range from a half-hour crossing by speedboat to a two-hour crossing by standard ferry. All vessels travel directly from the island back to the mainland. There aren't any other stops.

Luggage is often limited to two bags per passenger in smaller speedboats, whereas larger vessels allow up to 20kg. Also, there are limited departures throughout the day — you'll need to check each service provider's sailing schedule before blindly booking a ticket.

It's definitely a good idea to book your ferry tickets in advance because it can be a lengthy wait at the pier in the blazing hot Southeast Asian sunshine. Also, several ferries only run in the high season— October to April — so you'll need to bear this in mind if you're traveling outside these months.

And that's how to get from Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach. Make sure you have a bowl of mango sticky rice for me.
