About the ride from Phuket to Koh Lanta

After enjoying the night markets and island-hopping adventures around Phuket there's only one place to head to next, and that's Koh Lanta. Although this island is far from being 'undiscovered' by tourism there are still far fewer crowds than what you'll find on the more popular beaches in Phuket. Koh Lanta is also a lot more wild and rugged which is good news for hikers looking to explore along rainforest footpaths or seek out coral reefs with a snorkel mask.

To get to Koh Lanta from Phuket you've got a number of different ferry options. Available classes of vessel range from Standard and Tourist to speedboats and high-speed ferries. This means that you can reach the island in around 90 minutes if traveling by high-speed ferry or take your time to relax and enjoy the Andaman ocean views on a four hour standard ferry ride that also stops at Koh Phi Phi.

The distance from Phuket to Koh Lanta is approximately 80 kilometers (49 miles) and there are usually about 16 different daily departures, with prices starting from US$17.

You can also board a bus, minivan or a private car that will take you directly to Phuket's Rassada Pier. These combination tickets take a lot of the stress out of traveling as you know you're going to get to the port on time without getting a sweat on. Alternatively, if you're looking for a 'true traveler' experience, and if you want to save money, you can just book the ferry ride individually and make your own way down to the jetty in time to catch your ride.

Whichever way you choose to depart Phuket for Koh Lanta, don't forget to get to the port or pickup point in good time to make the crossing. Also, stop off at a market for snacks before you leave as there's not usually much in the way of food and drink to be purchased once you set sail.

What to see when traveling from Phuket to Koh Lanta

If you're jumping aboard a speedboat ferry, the crossing from Phuket to Koh Lanta isn't going to last longer than an hour and 30 minutes. These boats usually have an open back and are enclosed on either side and above. It's a good idea to be one of the first to enter the ferry because then you can get the best seats by the window.

Standard ferries are much bigger and will also have outdoor seating and an enclosed air-conditioned seating area. Whichever vessel you opt for, you can rest assured that some awesome Andaman Sea views await. This is an area that's dotted with lush green limestone islands and far reaching blue skies. Photographs will never do it justice but looking out over the side of a boat with the wind in your face and the sun on your back is a true Thai experience to truly savor.

How to get from Phuket to Koh Lanta

Taking a ferry

The ride from Phuket to Koh Lanta can either be quite quick if you're on a Speedboat Ferry or very slow (at least four hours) if you're traveling by Standard Ferry. Either way, you can expect to find comfortable seating and an onboard bathroom. Please remember to take some supplies with you, especially water, as there is usually not a snack kiosk on these types of boats. Another top tip is to get to Rassada Pier in Phuket in good time to get your pick of the seating. And, if you are lucky enough to nab a seat on the sundeck, don't forget your sunscreen so as to avoid getting burned before you've even arrived on Koh Lanta.

Taking a bus\ferry

Getting to Koh Lanta from Phuket is really easy by bus-ferry. Basically, it's a shared bus that delivers you right to Rassada Pier in time to catch your designated departure. Buses tend to leave from the central Phuket bus terminal at set times. Getting there at least 30 minutes before departure is the best idea to avoid a stressful last minute dash. It's about a 10 minute bus ride from the bus station to the pier so ample time to get to know a few of your fellow passengers before swapping wheels for waves.

Taking a minivan

Small groups often like to hire their own private minivan to take them from their hotel directly to Rassada Pier in time to catch the ferry from Phuket to Koh Lanta. It's a flexible way to travel and also means you can choose a time and pick up point that suits you. Alternatively, if you're looking to save your Thai Baht for something more interesting, you can opt to share a minivan with other travelers. Pick up points and departure times are set in advance but it's an affordable option and saves you having to lug heavy bags down to the harbor or shell out for a more costly taxi.

Driving with a private car

Couples often like the privacy and relative luxury of booking a private car to take them directly from their hotel to Rassada Pier just in time to catch a ferry from Phuket to Koh Lanta. Yes, it's a bit more expensive than a shared minivan or bus-ferry but can you put a price on peace, quiet and privacy? Basically, you get what you pay for and if you're looking for a reliable ride that's right on time then a private car is the only way to arrive in style and get down to the harbor in a hurry.
