What to see when traveling from Chiang Mai to Sukhothai

If you're traveling by road you're going to see a whole lot more than by air. Flying from Chiang Mai to Sukhothai may be fast but it's not the best option if you're hoping to see some scenery on the ground. Buses, minivans and cars give you a much more scenic experience, as do trains.

Leaving Chiang Mai is always interesting as you get to see life outside the city walls. The urban outskirts give you a much clearer image of local people living in the north of Thailand. High rise tower blocks overlook suburban parks whilst street corner temples are bedecked in marigolds.

If you're lucky you might be able to get one last look at the forested mountain slopes that lay to the north of Chiang Mai. However, for the majority of the ride by bus, car or minivan you'll be following the highway south until you reach Sukhothai.

Train travel is a lot more scenic but also slower. What trains also offer are the chance to walk around and chat to fellow passengers. This rail route is often undertaken by families going to see relatives. You'll be amazed at what you'll see on an eight hour train trip.
