About the ride from Belize City to San Pedro

Belize City is the natural gateway to the wonders of tiny Belize.

Home to the international airport and the hub of local transportation, it's highly probable that Belize City will appear on any Belize itinerary.

But when you're done exploring the Mayan ruins and jungled landscape of the country's interior, a string of lovely barrier islands lies just offshore for a perfect beach getaway.

At the top of that list is the largest island, Ambergris Caye, and its main town, San Pedro.

With a totally chill vibe and access to incredible watersports, this is a wonderful place to soak in some sun, explore the reefs and catch an amazing sunrise.

Best of all, you can get from Belize City to San Pedro in two hours or less.

Here's a rundown of the details you need to make it happen.

Five cool things to do in San Pedro

Perched at the doorstep of the Caribbean Sea, San Pedro is a great base of operations for exploring this region of natural attractions and beauty.

Here are some of the best things to see and do in San Pedro:

  1. Rent a golf cart and ride to Secret Beach. Nestled on the relatively undeveloped west side of the island. Secret Beach is in danger of losing its name. With very calm water and bright sand, this is a great place to lay back and relax.

Plus, getting there is half the fun via a golf cart for the 45-minute escape across the island.

  1. Explore the world's second-longest barrier reef. San Pedro is literally on the doorstep of the famed Mesoamerican Reef. This ensures that whether you're diving or snorkeling, you have access to world-class sites with plenty of marine life to enjoy.

Book a guided tour to visit some of the best spots.

  1. Go beach bar hopping. San Pedro is dripping with colorful beach bars lining the waterfront and beyond. You can take your pick of any number of establishments offering fresh seafood and cold cocktails for a tasty (and tipsy!) day of sampling the good life.

That fun continues after sundown, with live music and a festive vibe available just about everywhere.

  1. Take an excursion to see more natural beauty. Beyond the town of San Pedro, the beauty of coastal Belize beckons to be explored. You can take an excursion up to the wild Bacalar Chico National Park and Reserve at the northern end of Ambergris Caye to immerse yourself in the mangroves and lagoons.

  2. You can also take a snorkeling trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve on the southern tip of the island. There, you can savor the clear water and get up close and personal with the locals at the appropriately named Shark Ray Alley.

What can you expect when traveling from Belize City to San Pedro?

The budget-friendly options for getting from Belize City to San Pedro involve a ferry ride. Fortunately, that ride is across the relatively shallow and sheltered waters behind the barrier reef.

As you admire the turquoise-green color, you'll see the palm trees of various barrier islands to your right as you make your way north to Ambergris Caye.

Pulling into San Pedro, you'll find the colorful and compact town easy to navigate. Just drop your bags off at your accommodations and get ready to relax!

How to get from Belize City to San Pedro

There are two primary budget options for getting to San Pedro from Belize City — a ferry or a van + ferry combo ticket. The main difference is deciding which level of convenience matters most to you.

The following descriptions should help you choose:

Ferry

This is the most popular option with the greatest number of departures. Ferries will take about an hour and 15 minutes and allow one large bag up to 50 lbs/(23 kg).

You can choose your departure time from several sailings available throughout the day at the Belize Marine Terminal. Just over an hour later, you will arrive at either the operator's pier in San Pedro or the public San Pedro Terminal.

Prices start at $29 and include port charges in the rate.

It's up to you to make your way to the waterfront in Belize City from either the airport or your accommodations in town. The same goes on the flip side in San Pedro.

Van + Ferry

A van + ferry combination ticket is the best value option if you're flying into Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (IATA code: BZE) and don't feel like going through the hassle of getting into Belize City on your own.

For slightly more (starting prices are around $37 per person with a 2-person minimum), you will be met at the airport by a company rep and whisked through town onto your ferry without the aggravation of taking a taxi.

The total travel time from the airport to San Pedro is approximately two hours, though much depends on your flight's arrival time. With set departures throughout the day, you will have to align your itinerary with the options available.

Vans have air conditioning and allow for one 50 lb/23 kg piece of luggage and one handbag per person.

Port fees are included in the ticket price.

When is the best time of year to visit San Pedro?

Belize enjoys a tropical climate year-round with daily high temperatures that hover in the 80's°F/20's°C.

January through May is the dry season, with barely a drop of rain and warm sunny days. If visiting in January or February, be sure to bring a light jacket for the evening lows.

Summers are a bit hotter and a lot more humid, with the rainy season lasting from late June through November/December. However, rains will usually either blow through overnight or downpour briefly before moving on.

Overall, there's not a whole lot of risk that your vacation will be a washout.

Another factor to consider is the festivals.

Those who love the heat of July can enjoy the famed San Pedro Lobster Festival.

And if you're looking to party, Belizeans go big for their Independence Day and Halloween celebrations, September 21st and October 31st, respectively.

Where to travel after San Pedro

After sampling San Pedro's delights, a trip to nearby Caye Caulker is the next natural step.

Divers, in particular, will enjoy a trip a bit further to Caye Chapel Island and Lighthouse Reef.
