About the ride from Cahuita to San Jose
Set against the shores of the Caribbean Sea, Cahuita is a laid-back gem. Here, you can wander along uncrowded beaches, trek through the lush jungle, and spot local wildlife.
And if that weren’t enough, you can level up and do all three at the magnificent Cahuita National Park.
Eventually, you will need to move on — either to the rest of Costa Rica’s amazing sights or to your flight home. Either way, your travels will likely bring you to the country’s vibrant capital, San Jose.
With so many incredible natural attractions surrounding it, San Jose doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. But with a little planning and awareness, you can enjoy this urban island in a sea of nature for a well-rounded itinerary.
Though Cahuita and San Jose are separated by only 201 kilometers (124 miles), that distance is filled with rainforest-covered mountains and winding roads. So, despite the relative closeness, it will take around four hours of travel by road to make the trip.
Unmissable things to see and do in San Jose
Though San Jose doesn’t have the same reputation as other destinations in Costa Rica, it is not without its appeal. Here are some of the top things to see in San Jose:
Take a deep dive into culture at a San Jose museum: Like many capital cities, San Jose has several museums dedicated to preserving the national and cultural history of the land. The National Museum is probably the best of the lot, featuring exhibits that trace the region’s history from pre-Columbian times until now.
And if you’re itching to see some nature, they even have a butterfly garden at the entrance.
Sample local flavors with a food tour: Foodies will delight in taking a San Jose food tour. These tours start by bringing you to local markets where you can browse and select fresh produce and ingredients.
Then, you’ll have the opportunity to cook and enjoy a delicious meal — usually washed down with a cup of freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee.
Become an expert day tripper: San Jose is a great base of operations if you’re the type to stay in one place and play in another. You can go shopping in the handicraft markets at Grecia, take pictures in the sculpted church garden in Zarcero, or take in the majestic waterfalls at Bajos de Toro. And if you’ve got your own wheels, there are also several national parks within striking distance.
Take a historic walking tour: While not as famous as some other capital cities, San Jose’s historic center is worth a peek. The best way is to join a free walking tour or book a private one. Either way, you’ll get a deeper look into the history and architecture of the city with the added bonus of interacting with the friendly locals.

From the town of Cahuita, you will be driven up the coast to the regional capital of Limon. At this point, your route turns west, across the fertile countryside of eastern Costa Rica and eventually through the jungle-clad mountains of the interior.
Once you emerge, the city of San Jose will be there to greet you.
How to get from Cahuita to San Jose
Your options for getting from Cahuita to San Jose are broken down into two categories: minivan or car.
Both will take about 4-5.5 hours, including stops.
Here’s a breakdown to help you determine which option is best for you:
By minivan
Minivans are the most popular option for making the run to San Jose from Cahuita.
There are two options: a shared minivan or a private one.
A shared minivan ticket starts at $50. Some operators require a minimum number of passengers to make the trip.
With many operators to choose from, you should be able to find a departure time that works with your schedule.
If you book a private minivan, it starts at $275 for the vehicle, split amongst your group. Depending on the company you choose, vans fit between five and nine people.
Pick-up is usually from your accommodations in Cahuita. Drop-off is at a preselected location in town, the San Jose airport (SJO), or your hotel.
Minivans come with a driver, air conditioning, and, at times, reclining seats and even WiFi, depending on the operator.
Luggage allowances are generally one large bag per passenger (up to 20-25kg/44-55 lbs) plus a handbag. If you’re traveling with your surfboard, you can bring it along for an additional cost.
By car
Similar to a ride in a minivan, most car rides are in an SUV. Spend any time in Costa Rica, and you’ll understand why.
You can expect amenities such as a professional driver and air conditioning. As a smaller vehicle than a minivan, you have limited space for luggage and passengers. Generally, operators will allow one bag up to 25 kg (55 lbs) and one handbag per person.
Once again, you can expect a flat fee for the entire car (starting at $237). With three people max, your per-person price depends on how many are traveling with you.
When is the best time of year to visit San Jose?
Peak season in San Jose and most of Costa Rica is during the dry season, which lasts from December through April.
This means better weather for your outdoor activities, with high temperatures consistently coming in at around 23°C-26°C (74°F-79°F) throughout the year.
All that good weather translates to higher demand, with prices to match. This is especially true around holidays and school breaks like Christmas and Easter.
If you’re not scared off by the prospect of a little rain, a nice compromise is to visit during the shoulder month of May. While still enjoying overall pleasant weather, you’ll have the added benefit of seeing prices and crowd sizes drop.
The only bad time to come is between September and October when heavy rains make getting around the country a legit challenge.
How many days do I need in San Jose?
To see the top sights in the city, including the National Museum and a food tour, 1-2 days is enough.
But if you want to use San Jose as your base for visiting all the natural attractions in the surrounding area, you’d have no problem staying anywhere from three days to a week.
Where should I go after San Jose?
If you’ve yet to explore the north and west of Costa Rica, you have no lack of options ahead of you. Surfers will want to head to Jaco Beach, while those looking to get their adrenaline pumping will venture up to La Fortuna near the Arenal Volcano.
