What to Expect

If you are looking for an extension of your Venice holiday, but tired of the prices and the crowds, look no further than Rovinj.

Pronounced ro-VEEN, this charming town is located in Croatia’s Istria region and could be an extension of Venice. It really does look as though it belongs to Italy rather than the Balkan nation. This makes sense, though, because technically, Rovinj was part of the Venetian empire for many years.

If you fell in love with “The Floating City,” there are plenty of other reasons to venture across the Adriatic Sea from Venice to Rovinj.

Rovinj is the perfect place to base yourself if you’re planning a road trip around Croatia. It is within an hour and a half of pretty much everywhere in Istria, making it ideal for exploring the region.

There is also plenty to do within the city itself. Exploring Old Town is an absolute must! The streets are a labyrinth of shops, cafes, and restaurants, and getting lost while sampling local olive oil and truffles along the way is a great way to spend the afternoon.

St. Euphemia Church is a great place to get great aerial photos of the city. To snap that iconic photo of the town, including the harbor, you’ll need to climb to the top of the bell tower, but it is well worth it!

If photography or Instagram is your passion, the Rovinj port is a great place to get some photos. Luckily for you, you’ll probably arrive at this very spot, so make sure to take a moment to take in the views.

Of course, there are plenty of places along the waterfront to sip cocktails and enjoy a nice meal as the sun goes down. The curvy landscape makes it the perfect place to catch the sunset from so many different angles.

Pro Tip – Wear comfortable shoes! The streets are cobblestone, and there are plenty of steep hills throughout.

Crossing the Border from Italy to Croatia

What you need to know before you travel is that you will be leaving Italy and entering Croatia. Therefore, it’s always good to double-check your country’s visa requirements to make sure you don’t need a special visa when entering Rovinj.

You should also note that Italy is a part of the European Union and the Schengen Zone, which requires a special visa for many travelers.

Croatia is only part of the European Union, so its visa requirements will be slightly different from Italy.

Additionally, Croatia is currently using the Croatian Kuna as its currency. Exchange some Euros when you are in Italy or make sure your debit card will work when you arrive in Rovinj. You won’t be able to pay in Euros once you arrive.
