Rovinj to Venice

Once you’ve taken some time to explore the Venetian influence all over Rovinj, what better way to continue learning about the former empire than to travel from Rovinj to Venice?

Venice is known as “The City of Canals.” These wondrous waterways are hands-down the best way to see one of Italy’s most visited cities.

If you can time your visit during Carnival, you are in for a treat. This annual Mardi Gras begins on Ash Wednesday and is world-renowned for the intricate masks festival attendees and performers wear.

If large crowds and festivals aren’t for you, don’t worry! Venice has a lot to offer all types of travelers.

Venice is jam-packed with history and so much art that it’s the perfect place for a walking tour. You can design your own to ensure you see all of the sites on your bucket list or go with the plethora of companies that offer them. Of course, San Marco Square, the city’s famous piazza, should be included on your tour.

Any history buff should check out the Venetian Ghetto. It is actually the world’s oldest ghetto, established in 1516, and a great source of Jewish history and culture.

If you’re searching for more modern Italian culture, go for an aperitivo at one of Venice’s rooftop bars or sip Aperol Spritzes like a local at Osteria All’Arco. Try some delicious cicchetti (snacks) and experience the Italian way of having an afternoon snack to hold you over until your late dinner.

How to get from Rovinj to Venice

When considering how to get from Rovinj to Venice, there are a few options. The easiest and most convenient way to travel between the two cities is by ferry.

To get to Venice, it’s also possible to take a bus or a train + shuttle combination.

If you prefer private transport, you can drive or hire a car.

Rovinj doesn’t have an airport, but there is an international airport in Pula, 40 minutes away. This means flights to Venice are possible.

Ferry

The ferry from Rovinj to Venice is one of the most popular ways to travel. Venezia Lines and Kompas Ferries operate this route, and both ferries take approximately three and a half hours.

Ferry prices start around US$70 per person. Regardless of which company you travel with, they offer similar amenities such as AC and toilets and allow you to bring one piece of checked luggage.

Venezia Lines has economy tickets and VIP tickets. The main difference between the two is the VIP ticket allows you access to an upper deck. It’s the only outdoor seating on the boat and has plush, high-end chairs with limited capacity.

If you book a VIP ticket, you can also board and disembark first and bring an extra piece of luggage. However, this luxury costs an additional US$20, bringing the ticket cost to US$90 per person. The nice thing about VIP is that it’s limited to 30 people, so it will never feel too crowded.

Bus

Another way to travel is by taking the bus from Rovinj to Venice. Flix Bus operates this route, with tickets costing between US$18-22 per person.

The bus is relatively comfortable, with reclining seatings, free WiFi, and charging ports.

There are two departures at 12:05 pm and 17:55. The earlier option takes about six hours and 15 minutes and also requires a transfer in Trieste. FlixBus employees will help direct you to the correct bus to complete the journey.

The latter option only takes five and a half hours and is direct to Venice. It will make a few stops along the way, but you will not have to change buses.

Pro Tip – When traveling overland, you may transit through Slovenia. It’s also in the EU, but double-check the visa requirements for your country of origin, just to be safe.

Train

Train tickets to Venice can be very reasonable. Still, the problem is that there is no direct Rovinj to Venice train option.

If you decide the train is the right option for you, you can take a shuttle to Trieste, which takes just over an hour. There are shared rides for US$35 per person, where you book a space in a minivan.

You can also book a private transfer from Rovinj to Trieste, which costs between US$170-200 for the entire van. Companies such as GoOpti allow you to split the cost with everyone traveling in the vehicle, making it a good option if you’re traveling with a larger group.

From Trieste Centrale, you can take a train directly into Venice. This takes about two hours and costs between US$15-25 per person, depending on which ticket class you book.

If booking a transfer is too expensive, it is possible to use Interrail or Eurail to plan your journey and book separate tickets. You will just need to carefully check transfer times to ensure you can make each of your departures.

Flight

When considering how far it is from Rovinj to Venice, the cost and the hassle of a flight may not be worth it. But this is what you need to know…

Rovinj doesn’t have an airport, but the city of Pula is only 40 minutes away and has daily flights to Venice.

The downside is there are no direct flights, causing the trip to take just as long as the bus and cost exponentially more.

If you’re dead set on flying, set fare alerts to check for deals, and be sure to look for the easiest layover possible.

The best way to get from Rovinj to Venice is up to you, and don’t second guess yourself! Once you step foot on the Bridge of Sighs or enjoy your first aperitivo, all of the stress of traveling will melt away.
