The 124 miles (200 km) distance from Pokhara to Kathmandu can be covered by air or road. Multiple departures throughout the day and a quick 30 minute travel time make flights a very convenient option, while buses are very popular due to their economical pricing.

Travelers also have the option of booking a private minivan or taxi that gives a lot more flexibility in picking departure times and in the journey itself. And with hotel pick up and drop off, they take out the hassle of heading to and from the bus stop and airport.

How to get from Pokhara to Kathmandu

Taking a bus

There are around ten bus departures every day, and with ticket prices starting from $8 per passenger, they are a cost-effective way to travel from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Travel times range from 7 to 8 hours. All bus operators leave from Pokhara at around 06.00 or 07.00 in the morning, which means that you will reach Kathmandu by late afternoon or early evening. All the buses have air conditioning and cushioned seats (some are fitted with comfortable, reclining seats) and make multiple stops for passengers to grab a quick bite and freshen up.

Taking a private minivan 

With a five and a half hour travel time, taking a private minivan is a faster option and a good choice if you are visiting the country as part of a bigger group. It accommodates up to 9 passengers and provides a reasonable amount of legroom. Minivans offer hotel or airport pick up and drop off and allow you to choose a departure time providing you with a lot of convenience. Of course, it also allows you the flexibility of stopping over whenever you or your group wants - for food breaks and restroom stops. 

Hiring a private car/taxi 

Travelers also have the choice of hiring a private car or taxi to get to Kathmandu. With hotel and airport pick up and drop off, and flexibility in terms of departure time, private taxis are an excellent option for those who value convenience and don’t want the hassle of multiple transfers. It’s an ideal choice for families too! If you are traveling as part of a small group, you can book a standard sized car that is good for up to 3 passengers. For those who want some extra space and legroom too, you can book a more spacious SUV.

Taking a flight 

Travelers who prefer a shorter travel time and want to maximize their sightseeing can choose from the many flight options available. There are morning and afternoon departure times available, making it easy to select one that is most convenient for you. Do note that travelers are required to check-in at least 1 hour before the scheduled departure time. 

 

What to see when traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu?

If you are traveling by bus, taxi or minivan from Pokhara to Kathmandu, you will pass by small towns and villages and see quaint countryside scenes with locals going about their daily lives and children heading to school. Your road journey will, for a significant part of the time, trace the path of Trishuli River, popular for white water rafting expeditions.

Those traveling by private van or taxi and starting their trip early can stop midway to take the cable car up to Manakamana Temple for unforgettable views of the surroundings.

Those traveling by air are in for a visual treat. The trip, though short, provides you with sweeping views of the Himalayas. So, sit back and enjoy the sights!
