Island hopping in Thailand is the kind of adventure everyone should experience at least once in their lives. Traveling between Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe isn’t the everyday type of journey you’ll be able to take.
You’ll be “commuting” from one paradise to another while being spoiled with mesmerizing views of the blue Andaman Sea, and the sun blazing across the beautiful, blue waters.
When traveling the 131 kilometer (82 mile) distance between Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe, you’ll only have one transportation option. However, that one will definitely be memorable!
You’ll hop on a speedboat ferry that will take you from Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe in less than 3 hours. As you glide through the waters of the Andaman Sea, you’ll have a hard time choosing whether you want to take as many pictures as possible or enjoy the views!
Keeping in mind that these islands are among some of the most popular ones, the ferry tickets can get a bit pricey, especially during the high season. Another important thing to keep in mind is that there’s no real pier in Koh Lipe, only a floating one.
Once you arrive, you’ll be transferred to the beach from this pier in another smaller boat. Because of this, there are two more fees you’ll have to pay once you arrive on the island. One is for the boat, and the other one is the entrance fee for the island (200 Thai Baht, which is around $7).
Once you board the ferry in Saladan (Lanta) Pier, it’s time for a journey you’ll want to remember for a long time. Island hopping in Thailand is an activity that attracts a large number of tourists, and if you want to meet some other fellow travelers, there’s no better place to do that than on a ferry.
You’ll have three hours to get to know someone, share your tips and tricks, and hear all about their last party in Thailand. Prepare your camera, too. There’ll be many sights you’ll want to document on this trip.
As soon as you step foot on Koh Lipe, you’ll be greeted by one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand. This spot is so beloved by tourists that they even nicknamed it “the Maldives of Thailand.”
This is the kind of place you had in the back of your mind when picturing a vacation in Thailand – turquoise blue waters, beach vibes, tasty street food and cocktails, white sandy beaches, and colorful boats lined up next to the beach. It’s the perfect island getaway.
After listing out all the awesome things about Koh Lipe, you’re probably worried about the crowds of tourists that are storming to the island to enjoy all of its beauty. Well, don’t be! Koh Lipe isn’t as busy as other islands in Thailand, and the underwater life is still preserved (did someone say snorkeling!?)
When it comes to the best time of year to visit the island, you should be aware of the timing of the monsoon season, which usually occurs from late April up to early November. The time between November and April is the peak season and the best time to visit the island if you want to enjoy Koh Lipe in its full glory.
Even though the island isn’t that busy, it’s still recommended to book your accommodation a bit in advance, especially if you’re visiting between December and February.
The must-do thing in Koh Lipe is an early morning visit to Sunrise Beach. This piece of heaven didn’t get its name for nothing. The sunrises here are absolutely mesmerizing, and you can bring your yoga mat to stretch in silence while enjoying the beauty of nature.
When it comes to other things to do on the island, watersports are the name of the game around here. Koh Lipe has some world-class diving and snorkeling spots, and if you’re not afraid of going under the water, this is something you must experience.
No matter what you choose to do, you’ll be in for a great time!
Taking a ferry
Hopping on a ferry from Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe is the only way to make the journey between the two islands. The ferries are quick, and they arrive in Koh Lipe in less than three hours.
The ferries will make several stops before they arrive in Koh Lipe, in Koh Ngai, Koh Mook, Koh Kradan, and Koh Bulon. The ferries depart several times a day, so you’ll have plenty of departure times to choose from.
Once you arrive in Koh Lipe, you’ll have to pay an entrance fee, which costs 200 Thai Baht (around $7). There’s no real pier in Koh Lipe, and you’ll also need to pay a small boat fee because of that.
When it comes to ferry amenities, there are toilets on board. Transferring pets, bikes, scooters, or kayaks isn’t allowed. When you board the ferry, you’ll have to show your passport or ID card.
