Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang

Getting from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang is a whopper of a journey, but it’s worth every hour!

Luang Prabang is a charming town known for its stunning countryside vistas. In fact, the entire place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s packed full of temples and fantastic things to do, so it’s the perfect place to start your exploration of Laos.

The number one activity in Luang Prabang is climbing Mount Phousi. Once you reach the top of the 355 steps, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

Trekking out to the Kuang Si Waterfalls is another must-do and totally worth it. The turquoise pools are gorgeous, and there might be groups of monks wandering around, making for some fantastic photo opportunities.

Of course, visiting countless wats (temples), enjoying a cooking class, or simply relaxing by the Mekong would be a great way to spend your time too!

Now that you’re itching to go, you may be wondering, How do I get from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang? Don’t worry, it’s all below.

About the ride from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang

The distance from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang is 470 km (~292 miles). Most visitors choose to travel overland because it’s the cheapest option and a direct flight doesn’t exist.

Regardless of how you get to Luang Prabang, it will be a commitment. Buses can take over 16 hours, but there are overnight options, and they are relatively comfortable.

If you aren’t in a rush, you could also take the slow boat down the Mekong. This option takes two days, but you would get to see more beautiful countryside along the way.

Border Crossing Information from Thailand into Laos

When thinking about how to get from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang, one of the most important things to remember is you will be crossing the border. No matter which way you choose to travel, make sure you have double-checked all the visa requirements for your country of origin.

Most travelers can obtain a visa on arrival, which is valid for up to 30 days. It generally costs between US$30-45.

It’s also possible to get an eVisa online before traveling. It’s a much easier way of dealing with the visa process because you get everything organized before leaving.

Pro Tips – make sure you print out all the required paperwork and bring it with you to avoid paying extra fees. You also should bring two passport photos.

Exchange some Thai Baht for Laos Kip before you cross. You’ll get a better rate if you pay in local currency. You could also pay in USD if you have the correct change or small bills.

How to get from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang

There are a few options for transport from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang – a bus, a slow boat, or a flight.

Unfortunately, none of these options are particularly quick. However, travel in Asia is all about experiencing the local culture, so embrace it and enjoy the ride!

Bus

There are two different Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang bus options: standard and sleeper.

The standard option is operated by Naga Express and takes about 16 hours. The buses are normal coach buses and come equipped with air conditioning.

You can bring one large suitcase or backpack, which is stored under the bus, and one piece of hand luggage.

There are no toilets on board, but the bus will make a few stops along the way.

Bus tickets with Naga Express start around US$42 per person. As an added feature, you can change or cancel your ticket for free up to 24 hours before departure. It’s great if your travel plans change frequently or you’d like more flexibility when planning your trip.

If a 16 + hour bus ride sounds like torture, you can opt for a sleeper bus, so at least some of your trip, you’ll be sleeping.

Two companies operate a Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang sleeper bus route: Laos Group Tour and Naluang.

Both companies have buses with bed-like seats that recline almost completely flat, are equipped with AC and make a few rest stops along the way.

Laos Tour Group has a double flatbed you can book to share with your friend/partner. But if you’re solo, don’t book a double seat because you’ll be sharing with a stranger!

They also offer free hotel pickup in Chiang Rai.

Nuluang also offers complimentary hotel pickup in Chiang Rai and allows changes or cancelation to your ticket up to 48 hours before departure. Their tickets start at US$35 per person.

All three bus companies will help facilitate border crossing into Laos. But, again, read up on the visa requirements to make sure you have everything you need before getting on your bus!

Slow Boat

If you are looking to enjoy Laos’ beautiful scenery, the best way to get from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang is by slow boat.

You have the option of taking a local river barge, which costs about US$25 per person, or a river cruise, which is US$200 per person.

The river cruise is definitely the more luxurious, high-end option. Usually, it includes a stay in a local guesthouse in Pak Beng.

If you choose to take the local barge, you will need to book your own accommodation.

There is nothing to do but enjoy the scenery as you float down the Mekong River, but this is a great way to see more of Laos and experience a bit of local culture.

Both rides take about two days and will help facilitate the border crossing.

Flight

While there are no direct options, it’s possible to book a Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang flight with a layover in Chiang Mai or Don Muang in Bangkok.

Tickets can be very cheap, especially if you book early. Deals have been listed as low as US$20, so make sure to set your fare alerts and check flight websites often.

Air Asia and Thai Lion generally operate these flights daily but be prepared for a long layover.

Once you reach Luang Prabang, you’ll be ready to relax in the “Heart of Laos.” Take your time exploring the city and have your camera at the ready – you never know what Insta-worthy shot you’ll stumble upon!
