About the ride from Nusa Lembongan to Gili Trawangan Island

After the mellow Nusa Lembongan nightlife, Gili Trawangan, or Gili T, is calling your name. It's the go-to spot if you want to dive into crystal-clear waters by day and dance until sunrise by night. With laid-back beach vibes and a popping party scene, the island has a bit of everything.

The 2- to 3.5-hour ferry ride will feel like no time at all as you soak up the sun on the speedboat's roof or kick back and relax on a larger, slower ship.

Five amazing things to do in Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan might be the biggest of the Gili Islands, but it's still small enough to feel like your own slice of paradise. And while it may be tiny, it definitely packs a punch when it comes to things to do. Here are a few ways to make the most of your time on the island:

  1. Dive or snorkel with the sea life. Whether you're getting your scuba certification or just want to snorkel, Gili T offers some of the best underwater experiences around. Swim alongside manta rays, sea turtles, and white-tip sharks, and then find the famous underwater Gili Meno statue ring, a unique artificial reef with 48 life-sized human sculptures.

  1. Give freediving a go. If you're after a more serene underwater experience, try freediving. With calm waters, crystal-clear visibility, and minimal currents, it is the ideal place to learn this peaceful, no-equipment-needed skill.

  1. Cycle around the island. Want to explore the island at your own pace? Rent a bike and cruise around the island in under an hour! Stop for beachside drinks, take in breathtaking views, and find hidden spots for a quiet break. Let those island vibes take over.

  1. Dance the night away. Gili Trawangan may be small, but it knows how to party. The nightlife here is legendary, from bar crawls to reggae beats under the stars. Whether you're into dancing till dawn or chilling at a beach bar, there's something for every kind of night owl.

  1. Explore the reefs from a glass-bottom kayak. For a peaceful yet stunning look at Gili T's underwater world, hop in a transparent kayak and glide over the coral reefs. Enjoy the vibrant marine life without even getting wet.

How to get from Nusa Lembongan to Gili Trawangan

No matter how strong a swimmer you are, you'll be thrilled to know there are a lot of ferries that motor between these two island hotspots. It takes approximately 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on your ship's speed, its departure and arrival points, and whether it stops along the way.

At $17, it doesn't break the bank.

Every boat company is different, and so are their rules. Some have outside seating, and others have seats inside in the air conditioning. Some allow two pieces of luggage, others only one. Read all the details before booking so you don't get caught off guard.

If you can sit outside for part or all of the ride, do it! The views are epic, but it's super windy, and don't forget the sunscreen!

If you're prone to seasickness, be sure to put on that bracelet or take your meds long before you board the ship. Once you're moving, it could be too late.

Boats leave at least once daily, around 9 a.m., so you'll be there before lunch. Larger ships might have snack bars and bathrooms, but don't count on it. Be sure to take care of those needs before you board.

Best time to visit Gili Trawangan

The best months to visit are from May to October, during the dry season. Expect sunny days, warm temperatures (80-90°F/27-32°C), and calm seas. It's incredible snorkeling, diving, and exploring the island kind of weather. But it's also the high season, so it'll be crowded.

November to April brings the rainy season, with short tropical showers and higher humidity. The seas can get rough, making underwater activities less than ideal. It's also the quietest time on the island, so the party scene is almost nonexistent.

For fewer crowds and great weather, June and September offer a sweet spot with loads of sunshine without the peak-season rush.

How many days should you spend in Gili Trawangan?

Three days are enough if you're there to party and soak up the vibrant island atmosphere. But trust us, you'll never want to leave.

If you're diving, plan for about five days — you'll want time to complete your certification and slip into Gili T's incredible underwater world.

Not in a hurry to leave? Gili Trawangan is the kind of paradise where you might just decide to stay longer.

Where should you travel after Gili T?

Can't get enough of teeny island life?

Head east to your next-door neighbors, Gili Meno or Gili Air — it'll only take you 15 minutes.
