About the ride from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is Nusa Lembongan's bigger, wilder sister. She's more rugged and raw and even a bit more dramatic (as big sisters can be).

But drama aside, you have to visit. Its iconic beaches and epic views are famous for a reason.

Besides, if you're standing on Nusa Lembongan, you can practically throw a rock, and it'll land on Nusa Penida. It's that close. Like four miles away, close. This means the ferry ride is a whopping 15 minutes long.

Think you can handle it? Me too.

Let's get into the nuts and bolts of Nusa Penida…

Top five things to do in Nusa Penida

The island is adventurous and perfect for travelers who love exploring and hiking and don't mind roughing it a bit at times. Here are the things you can't leave the island without doing:

  1. Visit Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Cliff). It's a must-see viewpoint with jaw-dropping cliffs shaped like a T-Rex (hence the nickname) and turquoise waters below. If you're up for it, hike down to the beach—it's a stunner. Just be ready for the climb back up. It's worth every drop of sweat.

  2. Swim in Angel's Billabong and Broken Beach. Have you even been to Nusa Penida if you haven't been to these two Instafamous hotspots? The natural infinity pool and arched cliffs make for astonishing photo ops and a refreshing dip (when conditions are safe). They look straight out of a postcard. Just be sure to check the tide before jumping in!

  3. Snorkel with manta rays. Nusa Penida is famous for its clear waters and giant manta rays. The visibility here is unreal, so you'll get front-row views of these graceful creatures gliding right beneath you. Jump in, and you'll be swimming alongside these gentle giants — talk about bucket list vibes!

  1. Explore Diamond Beach. You'll feel like you've stepped into a tropical dream. With its dramatic cliffs, white sands, and clear blue water, this is the spot for soaking up the views and the sun. Plus, the swing and little treehouse at the top make for killer photos.

  2. Hike to Peguyangan Waterfall. It's not just about the waterfall — getting there means climbing down bright blue stairs clinging to the cliffside. Once you reach the bottom, there's a hidden temple and natural pools where you can cool off with ocean views all around. The whole trek is an adventure, and the views make every step totally worth it.

How to travel from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida

There is only one way to get between these two islands: a ferry. For the hefty price tag of $5, you can jump on this 15-minute ferry.

It departs about a dozen times a day, with the first ferry sailing around 8 a.m. and the last at 5 p.m.

Wanderlust Fast Cruise departs from the Yellow Bridge Port and takes you directly to FUNTASEA Resto & Bar. You can have a beer in hand before you can say Nusa Lembongan.

Trans Nusa Bahari takes off from their own port on Nusa Lembongan and arrives in Toya Pakeh Harbour.

Life jackets are provided, and you can bring two bags onboard.

The views from the ferry are pretty dazzling, but it's short-lived. If you can, sit outside to take it all in.

The best time to travel to Penida Island

The dry season, from May to October, is the only time to go to Nusa Penida.  You'll get sunny days, calm seas (perfect for snorkeling and boat rides), and way less rain messing with your plans. It's also not too crazy hot, so exploring those dramatic cliffs and beaches feels a lot more doable.

Avoid the rainy season, from November to April, at all costs. Heavy rain can make the rough roads kinda sketchy, plus the ocean gets choppy, not ideal for snorkeling or boat rides.

How many days should you stay in Nusa Penida?

Two to three days is enough time if you just want to chill and explore. Stretch it to three or four if you plan to snorkel or dive and hang out with the manta rays.

Where should you travel after Nusa Penida?

If you're ever ready to leave Nusa Penida's paradise, head for the rice fields and culture of Ubud, Bali. It will show you another side of Indonesia. Nusa Penida to Ubud takes around two hours and thirty minutes via a ferry and a minivan combo ticket.
