Naples to Capri

Naples is the perfect place to base yourself for lots of great adventures. The city is located on the west coast of the Sorrento Peninsula and a stone's throw away from some of Europe’s most beautiful islands. One Naples day trip you can’t miss is to the island of Capri.

Known for its breathtaking, rugged landscape, incredible high-end shopping, and delicious limoncello, Capri is every vacationer’s dream. A Capri day trip is the perfect way to get out and explore the Tyrrhenian Sea, and all the island has to offer. It is so beautiful, though – you probably won’t want to leave.

About the ride from Naples to Capri

The distance from Naples to Capri is a mere 33 km (about 20 miles) across the Gulf of Naples. Even though the island is so close to the homeland of pizza, transportation options are surprisingly limited. Don’t let that put you off, though! The ferry from Naples to Capri is relatively quick and very easy to navigate.

Make sure you note that there is a mandatory $3 (€2.50) landing fee for all passengers arriving in Capri, whether you are staying overnight or you are just coming from Naples for a day trip. Sometimes the landing fee is included in the price of your ferry ticket, but oftentimes you will be asked to pay this additional charge when you get off the boat. It is best to come prepared with a few Euro cash on you just in case.

How to get from Naples to Capri

You’ll be taking the ferry from Naples to Capri. The ferry isn’t just the best way to get to Capri. It’s the only way. The island doesn’t have an airport, and there is no train from Naples to Capri – the water makes that route a bit of a challenge!

Luckily, you do have a few different companies to choose from when booking your ferry ticket: Snav, NLG, and Alilauro. Each company has its own amenities and price points to offer so you can pick the best option for your travel style and your budget.

You may be wondering, how long is the ferry from Naples to Capri? It’s actually only 45 minutes to an hour! This short distance is perfect for a Capri day trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Because Capri is an island that caters specifically for tourists, it is important to note that ferries only operate during particular months of the year. Ferries do not run during the off season and schedules may be reduced as demand lessens. Additionally, because each company is different, make sure to check the Naples to Capri ferry schedule to see when ferries are running and which option works best with your travel plans.

Naples and Capri are well oiled machines when it comes to ferry transfers. You could also easily organize a transfer straight from Naples Airport to Capri by booking a car to get you to the port to hop on the ferry.  Each ferry company has their own area of either port, and they are all well marked. No matter which company you decide to go with, you will depart from the Ferry Terminal in Naples. Simply look for the right logo and board that board according to their specifications. You will also arrive at the Porto Turistico di Capri regardless of who you book with. There will be plenty of people waiting to help you with your bags and help you to your hotel at the port if you haven’t organized something through your accommodation.

High-Speed Ferry by NLG

One high-speed ferry option is operated by NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo) and takes approximately 45 minutes to get from the mainland to Capri.

Unlike some of the other options, there is no snack bar on the NLG ferries. Make sure to pack your own food or fill up in Naples before you leave if you need something to eat.

The baggage policy also allows you to bring a bag that is 50 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm. Anything larger is subject to an extra charge. For a small fee, you’re also able to bring your bicycle on this ferry.

If your travel plans frequently change, a nice feature of booking with NLG is that you are able to cancel or change your booking up to 5 hours prior to departure, minus a 30% fee.

Note that NLG only operates its ferry service from April 1-June 30.

Economy Ferry by Alilauro

A favorite ferry among tourists is the economy ferry operated by Alilauro.

An added benefit of the economy ferry is that you can also make changes or cancel your trip up to ten days in advance. This is only subject to a 10% cancelation fee, which is great for people who may decide to stick around the islands for longer than intended..

Alilauro operates from June 15 through September 15.

High-Speed Ferry by Snav

The high-speed ferry operated by Snav is the most expensive option of the three, starting at $35 per person. The ride takes approximately 45 minutes and has three departure times per day at 7:00 am, 9:10 am, and 16:00 pm. Once you book, these tickets are nonrefundable.

These boats are pretty comfortable, and are definitely the fanciest of all the options. They all have AC, bathrooms and a snack bar where you can purchase food and water.

Snav offers seats inside, where you can enjoy these amenities. But there are also seats outside where you can take in the incredible blues of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Snav allows passengers to bring 10kgs of hand luggage with them, perfect for a Capri day trip. Additional baggage is subject to a surcharge.

Pets are also welcome on board for an extra fee.
