Rome is Italy’s capital, and like Positano, it’s not short on beauty or excellent food. It’s also a hotspot for world-famous landmarks and historical spots. From the Sistine Chapel to the Colosseum, it’s not hard to make an itinerary for this city.

Five top things to do in Rome

Whether you’re visiting for the ancient history, religious splendor, or famous food, there’s always a reason to spend a few days in Rome. And if all roads truly lead to Rome, a few days in the city are inevitable.

Here are five things to do and see while you’re here:

  1. The Colosseum: Known for gladiators, glory, and grandeur, the Colosseum is a must for any Rome trip. Constructed as far back as 72 AD, it is the largest amphitheater in the world, and it’s absolutely fascinating. Book a guided tour if you want historical facts as you explore.

  2. Roman pizza: Did you know Rome has its own style of pizza? Introducing Roman Pizza, a style that’s crispy and not afraid of toppings. You’ll find this at most restaurants.

  3. Sistine Chapel: The Sistine Chapel is within the pope’s official residence in Vatican City. Inside the chapel, you can gaze upon Michelangelo’s jaw-dropping frescos. You’ll need to pre-book a tour to enter, but it’s worth it!

  4. Trevi Fountain: The Trevi Fountain is a majestic sight in the center of the city. Commissioned by Pope Clement XII in the 18th century, this Baroque fountain is in pristine style today. You don’t have to book or pay to see this wonder, but you will have to navigate the crowds. Arrive earlier for a more comfortable visit.

  5. National Museums of Rome: You can’t deny Rome’s iconic history, so make the most of it while you’re in town.

The National Museums of Rome (there are four altogether) house rare statues and artworks from the Roman era and a few contemporary installations and interactive exhibits. Plus, you can buy one $24 ticket to enter all four museums.
