The options for transport from Sorrento to Ischia depend on which month of the year you are traveling. 

You can take a direct ferry if you travel from May to October. 

If you are traveling from November to April, you’ll still be able to take a ferry, just not a direct one. Instead, you’ll have to take a ferry from Sorrento to Naples or Capri and then transfer to another ferry headed towards Ischia. However, do note that the frequency of ferries reduces during the winter months.

Another option is to cover the distance from Sorrento to Naples by road, private taxi, bus, or train, and then take a ferry from Naples to Ischia.

How to get from Sorrento to Ischia

 

Taking a ferry from Sorrento to Ischia

 

During peak season 

During the peak tourist season that runs from May to October, you can take a direct Sorrento to Ischia ferry.

A one-hour travel time makes this the most popular option. 

Alilauro is the only operator offering a ferry service on this route. There are typically 1-2 departures per day – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. 

The ferry leaves from the Port of Sorrento and arrives at the Ferry Terminal Ischia. 

With capacity for a few hundred passengers, these vessels offer indoor and outdoor seating. While it's great to opt for an outdoor seat, you can also sit in the air-conditioned, indoor space. The ferries have washrooms too.

Ferry prices from Sorrento to Ischia start from US$28 per person. 

You are allowed to take one piece of luggage weighing up to 9 kgs with every ticket. You will need to pay US$3 for every extra piece you check-in. Bicycles are allowed on board for an additional US$7 fee. 

Those traveling with pets are in luck. The ferries have a pet-friendly policy, so you can bring small cats, dogs, and other pets for an additional US$5 fee. If you have any of these requirements, do remember to select the appropriate options during checkout.

During low season

From November to April, during the low tourist season, visitors will only be able to travel from Sorrento to Ischia via another port.

You can take a ferry from Sorrento to Capri and then transfer to another ferry from Capri to Ischia. 

The other and more popular option is to go via Naples. So, you’ll have to take a ferry from Sorrento to Naples and then hop on another ferry from Naples to Ischia. 

While the frequency of departures might be decent from Sorrento to Capri or Naples, the number of boats departing to Ischia from Capri or Naples might be minimal. Check the ferry timings of all routes so that you can plan your travel and minimize your layover time. 

Due to the transfer and layover time, the travel duration is around two hours. 

Ferry and boat services can get canceled if weather conditions are not favorable. 

 

Taking a private boat from Sorrento to Ischia

Taking a private speedboat is another option available to well-heeled travelers. Though the most expensive option, it allows you more flexibility in terms of departure timings and, of course, provides a more upscale travel experience. 

Since this is a direct route, the travel time is around one hour.

Depending on the size of the boat, it can accommodate six to ten passengers – perfect for families and friends traveling together. 

 

Taking a ferry + road transport Sorrento to Ischia

If you are open to road travel, you could also take a bus, taxi, or even train from Sorrento to Naples and then catch a ferry headed towards Ischia. 

Travel time, without factoring in layover time, is around two hours.

This gives you more options to explore, especially during the off-season, when ferry frequency is low. It's also a good choice for travelers looking to explore and visit other attractions and towns on the way.
