About the ride from Bol to Korcula

After soaking up the sun on Zlatni Rat Beach, consistently rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, you'll no doubt want to complete your Croatian island-hopping experience.

Korcula is the perfect destination to extend the adventure, and it's just 31.9 miles (51 kilometers) away.

Traveling between Bol and Korcula is easy because the only option is to hop on a two-hour ferry across the gorgeous waters of the Adriatic Sea.

What is Korcula like?

This lesser-known island is one of Croatia's greenest destinations. It is layered with luscious, dense pine forests and covered by vineyards that grow the finest grapes for your wine-hungry palates.

It's a welcome break from the party-loving islands all over the Adriatic Sea.

Despite its proximity to some of Croatia's hottest tourist destinations, this stone-walled town gets less air time, translating to more serene beaches and untouched landscapes for you to enjoy.

Legend claims that the Greek hero Antenor discovered the island when he escaped Troy. Thanks to its stunning scenery, the fortified medieval old town is listed in UNESCO's tentative list of outstanding world heritage sites.

Aside from the idyllic cobbled streets and sprawling coves, sweeping vineyards and olive groves produce local olive oil and wine and offer spectacular views.

Four unmissable activities in Korcula

Most activities involve taking in views and sitting on beaches — not bad for a vacation.

  1. Spend an afternoon wandering the Old Town, which also happens to be one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The town is a fascinating architectural gem, defined by cobbled streets and crenelated walls.

  1. Wine lovers must book a wine-tasting tour to marvel at Korcula's magnificent scenery while sampling some of Croatia's best vintages.

  1. Spend a few days luxuriating on the island's many gorgeous beaches, including Pupnatska Luka beach on the south coast. The pebble beach is blessed with sweeping vistas of nearby Lastovo Island, framed by sparkling blue water and just a 20-minute drive from the old town.

Sandy beach purists should head to Lumbarda, a small fisherman's village with the only sandy beaches on the island.

  1. Korcula is yet another Croatian destination perfect for island-hopping. Check out the uninhibited island of Proizd, home to an array of secret beaches. Visit Badija to see incredible 15th-century Renaissance architecture, or stop by Stupe to enjoy the beaches in style at one of its gorgeous beach clubs.

How do I get from Bol to Korcula?

The journey between Bol and Korcula is a simple one because the only method of transportation is by ferry. Tickets start at $26.

Several operators run ferries with regular departures, but the schedule is lighter during the off-season. Always book in advance to guarantee your journey goes smoothly.

The only travel class available is a high-speed ferry. These boats only accept passengers, so don't plan on driving your rental car to the port.

Ferries depart from Bol Port and arrive at Korcula Port. It takes approximately two hours to complete the journey.

The air-conditioned boat usually has at least one stop at a nearby island en route.

You can expect a WC on board.

Passengers have a luggage allowance of up to 45 lbs (20 kg).

Additional cargo

Pets and bicycles are also allowed.

Although pets can travel on board, there are strict rules about how they are transported.

Small pets must stay in a carrier, box, or cage. With an exception for guide dogs, all dogs must be muzzled and kept on a leash for the duration of the journey.

Ticket prices for animals depend on their size, with smaller pets traveling at 50% of a passenger ticket price and larger ones demanding a ticket for 100% of the ticket price.

Those traveling with pets must also bring vaccination documents to show before boarding. The ferry operates with a rule of one pet per passenger.

To take a bicycle on board, passengers must buy an additional ticket for the same price as a passenger fare.

The best things about the journey from Bol to Korcula

You won't want to sleep through this journey. Grab a window seat or find a spot on deck to enjoy the spectacular views between Bol and Korcula.

Keep an eye on Bol as you sail away to watch the town's V-shaped beach disappear on the horizon. Bid farewell to the green-capped hills and mountains that the island of Brac is famous for and set sail for Korcula on the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea.

After a short sail, passing by various other stunning Croatian islands, Korcula will soon peak over the horizon.

The glorious stone structures that make up Korcula's skyline will welcome you into the port. As the stone buildings with orange roofs edge ever closer, the lush, green mountains framing the city will cast a spell over you.

When is the best time to visit Korcula?

Between September and early October is the perfect time to see Korcula alongside great weather and fewer crowds.

Croatia's peak tourism season is during the summer months, particularly in July and August, when the weather ranges from 73°F (23°C) to 86°F (30°C). All outdoor activities and watersports will be open, but you'll experience the island with a lot of fellow tourists.

Book an off-season trip from April to May or late October to November for the best prices on accommodation, fewer crowds, and mild, pleasant weather. However, some places will be closed, and ferries won't operate as frequently during this period.

How long should I spend in Korcula?

A few days is more than enough time to explore the entirety of Korcula, particularly if you're only interested in sunbathing.

However, book accommodation for a week if the nearby islands appeal to you. The sprawling beauty of Korcula is an ideal choice for a home base while island-hopping around the Adriatic Sea.

Where should I go after Korcula?

Next, check out the incredible island of Hvar. This popular destination is perfect for those seeking a seafront destination with a rich history to satiate even the heartiest appetite for culture.

Alternatively, exchange island-hopping for a city adventure by heading to Dubrovnik, Croatia's capital, for a change of atmosphere.
