About the ride from Hvar to Pomena, Mljet Island

After spending a few days lounging and partying on the popular island of Hvar, you’ll probably need a little downtime on a lesser-known but equally fascinating island of Mljet. Located in the stunning waters of the Adriatic Sea, this less-developed island will give you a sense of stepping back in time, especially in the town of Pomena.

The trip from Hvar to Mljet takes about two hours, and the only way to reach Pomena is by ferry.

Four fascinating things to do in Pomena

Here are some wonderful attractions to explore during your visit to Pomena, Mljet Island:

  1. Take in the sunset. Pomena is a quaint seaside village on the western side of Mljet Island with incredible sunset views. After a day of exploring the island, it is a good place to relax and unwind. Stroll along the promenade and enjoy a drink at a bar.

  1. Explore Mljet National Park. The island is about 23 miles (37 km) long and 2 miles (3.2 km) wide. Most of it is covered in forest. One-third of it is occupied by the park, which offers hiking, kayaking, swimming, and bike riding. Visitors can also visit two stunning saltwater lakes, Roman ruins, and a Benedictine monastery.

  1. Visit the Odysseus Cave. Odysseus supposedly shipwrecked at this site when the island was controlled by the nymph Calypso. According to legend, she held him captive there for seven years. Today, you can cliff-dive and swim in the crystal clear waters of the grotto.

While the experience is amazing, it is about a 30-minute walk down a rocky hill through the olive trees.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of drinking water for the descent and ascent. After reaching the top, chill out with an icy drink at MARS, a cliffside bar above the cave.

  1. Enjoy the sand at Saplunara Beach. While a great deal of the coastline is rocky, Saplunara Beach is a pristine favorite for guests to Mljet Island. The water is calm and clear, which makes it a great swimming spot. Beach loungers and umbrellas are available for rent, and there are places to purchase drinks.
