About the ride from Koh Phangan to Ao Nang

Southern Thailand is a brilliant place to explore. With two gorgeous coastlines stretching along the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, you realy can’t go wrong wherever you explore. So if you’ve got plans to travel from coast to coast, now’s the time to grab your backpack, ring your mates and hit the road. Who’s in?

If you’ve been partying under the light of the full moon on Koh Phangan, chances are you’re looking for a change of pace. This iconic experience can be pretty full-on, and there’s nowhere better to escape after a hard-core night of hedonism than Ao Nang.

The distance from Koh Phangan to Ao Nang is 275 kilometers (170 miles).

There currently aren’t any flights scheduled because Koh Phangan doesn’t have an airport. However, there is one under construction, apparently, so watch this space for more info.

To get off the island and across the Gulf of Thailand, you need to take a ferry from Thong Sala pier on Koh Phangan to Don Sak pier on the mainland. This part of the trip takes approximately two hours and 30 minutes.

Passenger ferries have an air-conditioned seating area below deck and a sunbathing area on the open-top deck. You’ll also find restrooms and a snack kiosk onboard. It’s a relatively comfortable voyage, although it can feel very choppy if you’ve not had much sleep!

Once you’ve arrived on the mainland, you’ll jump on board a tourist bus heading southwest to the Andaman Sea. The most popular route is to follow Highway 44. Total travel time ranges from six to eight hours depending on traffic and waiting for the bus to depart.

The best way to travel from Koh Phangan to Ao Nang is to buy a combination bus/ferry ticket. This lets you complete the journey in the easiest way possible. Tickets are very affordable, and when everyone’s woken up from their much-needed snooze, it can be quite a fun and sociable ride.

There are four different local companies selling bus/ferry tickets: Songserm, Phantip Travel, Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery. All of these transport providers are long-established and have great safety records.

The least expensive form of transport from Koh Phangan to Ao Nang is the high-speed bus and ferry by Songserm. Tickets start from US$26, and the total overland trip takes about six hours.

Seatran Discovery’s high-speed bus and ferry is also very popular. A one-way ticket costs around US$34. You’re actually traveling by minivan rather than a large coach, so this tends to be a bit more comfortable. It’s also quieter, and there’s more space to stretch your legs.

Although you can opt to take a private minivan or taxi once you’ve reached the mainland, it really makes mores sense to buy a combined ferry and bus ticket. It’s cheaper, easier and a lot more fun!

What to see when traveling from Koh Phangan to Ao Nang

If you’re wondering the easiest way to get from Koh Phangan to Ao Nang, the answer’s simple. It’s the ferry/buss combo.

There’s plenty to see, and you might actually get to meet a few of your fellow passengers along the way, unless they’re all sleeping off last night’s party.

Crossing the Gulf of Thailand takes just under three hours and provides endless views. Keep a watchful eye out for the islands of Koh Samui and Ang Thong as you start to approach Dan Sak pier on the mainland.

Once you’ve clambered down the gangplank, you might face a wait until the bus departs. There will be several places to buy food and drink for the journey or just stretch your legs before you board the bus. Don’t stray too far, though, as the bus might leave without you!

The bus leg of the trip allows you to get from Koh Phangan to Ao Nang in the most sociable way possible. Most journeys are made in the day, and most party-goers will have livened up after catching some Zs during the ferry ride.

Between making friends and playing cards, keep your eye out the bus window for roadside towns and villages. It’s great to see all the street food stalls, waving schoolkids, and Buddhist temples as local people go about their day-to-day lives oblivious of tourism.

Ferry was great, seats very comfortable. Transfer to Surat Thani town was quick and easy, the bus was very nice. The van from Surat Thani town to Krabi was pretty cramped, so bare that in mind. Then from Krabi town they dropped us off at our hotel for free which was great. Overall would definitely recommend this service, especially for the great price!
